Guess what is easing the scours????

R

:)Just wanted to share something.......

well, we tried EVERYTHING.i mean everything.. all he did was get worse scours and a crappy coat. finally i took him off EVERYTHING medicine or medicated.....

We went with his reg strength replacer and watered with half RICE WATER (10 oz total). if he was still hungry he got 3 oz of RICE WATER. now i still added a heaping spoon of yogurt once a day.water, pellets and dirt are available..4 feedings a day 6 am 1130 am 5 pm and 830-9pm

the scours have gone from water to soft form tonite (and only 3 SMALL occurances today) in 24 hrs....its not pellets yet, but a definate improvement

Albon LS50 Bactrim Kaopectate Pepto Immodium Pumpkin, etc did nothing to him but get him all messed up worse

i finally said the hell with it and went with my old time Mommy fixes that i used on my kids......now i am not saying these dont work, but they didnt do the job for Itty Bitty.......

oh and to add, his appetite has picked up temendously today.......but i wont let him overfeed now......

An old time remedy we sometimes use is a couple tea spoons of scorched flour to the bottle. Seems to help firm the pellets. Allen

All we use is a packet of deliver!!!Its made for calves and it has a gelling agent in it!!!You have to mix it with their milk and feed it pretty fast because when they say it jells they are not kiddin!!!If you use a little bit in each bottle for one day they will go from loose to solid....Overnight!!!!!

i used gelling agents........like Arrest and such......didnt work either i WOULD have the fawn that would be difficult lol gotta love them

that i am adding to my BOOK OF HOME REMEDIES

I'm not sure if Albon is the same thing as Sulmet (and too lazy to look), but Sulmet is what solidified my two does overnight...I too had a bad problem with scours in the beginning of bottle feeding my two does. I tried everything I could think of including adding tincture of iodine to their bottles, which helped for about a day, but Sulmet was the only thing that finally worked.

Our biggest problem when we talk of scours is so many different bacteria or parasites that could be the problem. One drug may work for one guy and not the other. Not the drugs fault, we were just not using the right drug to help our fawn. Each of us has our own bag of tricks that works in our own area for the scour problem we deal with in our area. It's good to know what works for other people just in case our own bag of tricks isn't working. Guess what I'm trying to say is all we can do is try to help our little friends the best we can. Sharing our ideas will help us all.

I have also found improvement in stubborn diarrhea by backing off of treatment. I think after you try so many different things on their systems, the constant changes might actually become the source of continued diarrhea. Sometimes I also wonder if you are not giving them much substance (diluted milk, pedialyte, etc.) is there enough in there to get solid? Now as long as they look good, act good, and drink well, I try to treat the diarrhea less aggressively. One thing at time, and starting with simple remedies (pumpkin, pepto, probiotic, etc) before giving them any drugs. Like Jack says, there are so many causes, and everyone has some tricks that works for them. Good luck with your boy.

if the replacer is mixed too strong they will get the runs. And they are all different you can feed the same mix to ten fawns and they might all be ok but one. I think its the fat in the mix that does it.

my feelings exactly.. we get so caught up in FIXING every little problem to make life perfect, but sometimes there are little "bugs, virus, whatever" that just need to run its course and clear out. i plead guilty.....out of love and concern.. well ,my guy still has loose stools, (100% improved in 24 hrs) and getting pastier each time (YAH !) BUT he is healthy, bright eyes, mischevious, full of energy and his appetite has picked up immensely. i have cut him to 4 feedings a day (he drinks 10-12 oz and still wants more), encouraging the pellets and introducing slowly some wheat bread teeny pieces, a small strawberry, etc. but only 1 different item a day. gonna go back to the way i raised my kids lol adding gerber rice cereal to the bottle is easy on the stomach too and adds some substance to it....i had a stool sample done and he is clear of anything that could cause probs, so far so good. Hubby says i "over mothered" him ...

remember the first child? OMG a boo boo was an ER visit, 2nd child you're just "get up, you'll be ok" hahaha

i mix the replacer 1 part to 4 parts water. and today i am diluting 1/3 with rice water in the bottle. i would rather he drink more, if it stays inside and doesnt pour out the back end..so far so good and he is peeing alot too! kidneys are good :)

my first born son had to go on carnation non fat powdered milk and REAL FOOD (as in peas-cornbread, yeah we southern here:) at 3 weeks old....hes 25 and 6'4.....couldnt tolerate ANY milk or formulas , but now he drinks a gallon of red cap a nite.......go figure

ok, we are back to the watery scours........dang it......i have 2% tincture iodine on hand, if the normal useage for scouring calls for 7% , dont ya thing instead of 1 cc i could add 3 cc to the next bottle?

right now since i havent used anything for days, i scorched flour and added to the bottle.....gonna try that today and see what happens.......

sucking down the bottles......scours is yellowish and wtery but not severe where it is constant and runny down the leg.......definately no substance to it gave him some gas drops as he seems to have a bellyache ......no signs of bloating though

Probiotics, Probiotics, Probiotics I don't care who's you use (Some are better than others)but they should always be one of the first things you try. Most of the time if they don't fix the problem you have a pretty serious issue. Try liquid charcoal it will help absorb toxins. So far knock on wood this has worked for us with out having to get to deep into medicating them.

i am still doing the probiotics daily......even got the vet stumped......

IMO...try backing off the probiotics in the bottle. The evening after I begun adding probiotics (brand name Probios), both of my girls ended up with terrible scours. I used the iodine for 3 days and no Probios and they got rock hard. Added the Probios to build that good bacteria back up after the iodine...instant scours again.

What I ended up doing was instead of adding the Probios to their bottle, I would lightly top dress their feed with it...they were only nibbling on the feed so they didn't get much, but could get SOME. I also gave them their own small pen outside and used a tiller to till up a large area of fresh dirt/grass which they were frequently seen munching on.

On top of that, I did a treatment of Sulmet. Using that combination of methods, scours went away and never returned. They've had a couple days recently where they were a little mushy (but not runny), but they went over 3 months without ANY issues whatsoever. Perfect pellets.

It's worth a shot?

I use Probiotics in every bottle, have had zero problems since I started this. It is also in my feed mix for every deer that I own. I dont think that the probiotics would be the cause of the scours, just dont think so. I do think that we can give them to many different things at times to take care of a problem that they may be having and by doing this we cause more trouble for them. All of my fawns went to droping pellets early and did so all of the way untill the last bottle I gave them, just have two left on the bottle now. This year was my best year with fawns saved 100% that were bottle fed the only one's I lost were left on the doe. I had two that were killed by other deer.

it may sound like i am poundin him with "treatments" but i am really not....i am giving his system a time out in between to settle and try to adjust...... right now i have backed off the probiotics, watered down the replacer, and just crushed some immodium to go in the bottle. i do add some gas drops because of the rumblins that i was hearing in his tummy and he sucks down a bottle so fast. i wondered if he had "too much" good bacteria in his system as hubby suggested..i will start top dressing his feed with the probiotics slightly.

3 bottles a day (10-12 oz) plenty of outside time to nibble in the dirt and grass. he did refuse his nite bottle (4th at 8 pm), but went right to nibbling calf manna pellets. he thinks theres medicine in it (lol).. he gets moved to his pen and stall today and will see how he does. other than that he is wonderful....he is right at 6 weeks now and growing like a weed even with the tummy probs. I do wish that the Doe that i had would have made it. I wanted him to grow with another deer and not just me. Oh well, he is really bonded to the cats Callie and Samantha. We expect to see them following him thru the woods too... hahaha

If it continues, i will take another stool sample back to the vet, but u know, we have had this issue since DAY 1...for almost 5 weeks.

I will add that I am building up quite a Medicine Chest and plan on being ready for the ones that will follow prob in the spring. I have read and read and printed off remedies, but i wont give up on a single one no matter what.....

thank you for all your input and suggestions !

Season opens here very soon and my dad said i may even end up with a few due to very late breeding this year.he's seen LITTLE ones when he has been out to the hunting club. i hope not, i still have new fencing to get up over the existing to keep OUT critters...

I have used probios brand probiotics, and haven't been impressed. It never seemed to help, and every time they got better was without it. I think the idea is good, but not sure if I like that brand. Have heard really good things about Target fawn paste on these forums, so I am going to give that a try the next time one of mine has troubles.

Scott, did the pumpkin to begin with, i have a freezer full of it............no change. Vet said that pumpkin is just a source of fiber, so any over the counter Metamucil type stuff will work the same...

update report here......now mind you, during ALL of this his behavior has NOT changed at all. still playing, running, chasing the cats, being a nosy little child like deer....

i pulled him off of EVERYTHING medicated or medication for 24 hours except half water half milk to clear his system out. he takes 3 bottles at 10 oz each

day 1 half milk half water 3 x day.......4 oz of pedialyte with gas drops and water 3 x in between feedings to keep hydrated.. Peeing like a horse, so that is a good sign.. Watery bowels, squirting dark, no smell..

day 2 (yesterday) I added 2 crushed immodium to each bottle. NO probios (i know those will disagree), NO yogurt, no gelling agents...... NOTHING but the immodium and 2 droppers of Baby gas drops in each bottle. 2 loose episodes before lunch, nothing after noon

day 3......proud to report that poop is toothpaste now. he went right after his morning bottle, no smell still. I hear rumblin in his tummy after he eats, so i think the gas drops help.. he is eating dirt, some grass, nibbling on pellets some. spending more time outside in the sunshine with me. (trying to paint the barn with a deer is not fun or recommended as they are way too nosy !)

...will continue this for 2 more days slowly going back to full milk replacer.. hubby firmly believes that there was just too much bacteria in his system (good and bad) and that the Probios was the underlying cause (gotta love livin with a pharmacist, he breaks every compound down good and bad lol)

so in closing, we are staying status quo and see where it goes.. after his system gets straight, i will try to reintroduce the Probios and see if it affects him again. If it does, then i will know for sure.
