Help/Advice?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a little bit of advice/opinions on a buck of mine. Its a buck I just purchased from a neighboring farm. Seems as if he's been limping since we've darted him. Darted him in the right rear leg, up and back right where I normally dart them. However, after coming too, he's been favoring that leg. He will run on it if I'm in the pen and move him, however when he's calm and in daily routine he holds it up and puts minimal pressure on it. It's been about 2 weeks since I moved him. Everything else is normal, no swelling and everything else is good. This is the first time I've had one limp for this long.

Any thoughts help ideas? Should I be concerned?

The dart most likely hit the bone. It should clear up on its own. Get a pair of good binoculars and look the injection site over well to see if there is a festered spot where the dart hit him. Many times a dart will curl a hair or two into the spot it enters and cause an infection. That is why it is always appropriate to clean the dart wound before reversing and coat it with an anti-biotic creme.

Thanks you Mr. Heinrich. The buck is very tame, I was able to take good look at the area and seen nothing. If it continues I will give meds for an infections. Was just a lil worried being its been about 2 weeks and this was the first time I encountered this problem. Being a small mostly hobby farmer, I do not have extensive experience. I do however appreciate your response and advice. Thanks I will keep updated. Happy holidays.

i had the same problem with 2 years old buck, but they shoot him right at the scapula, and after 1 week no changes, I began with 1cc of Dex for 3 days, and it worked very well, i agree with Heinrich opinion!,

Would you dart him in the same leg with the dex? Or put him back down and give it seperate? I looked over his leg very closely today again and still dont seem to see anything out of the ordinary, the joint area on his knee may be slightly swollen but its hard to tell. If it is, its very slight. I looked him over at maybe 5ft, very close. I will try and take pics tomorrow to help. I may just be a worry wart, but id rather be safe then sorry.

Heres a few pictures of the buck i refer to above. For a few days the leg didnt seem to be bothering him much at all. Now hes favoring it again. I also noticed today some hair missing on the opposite side. Hes not with any other buck to fight with and the pen is very protected from predators. I've seen this if they are fighting or hit the fence, but niether is a factor with this one. Any thoughts? Starting to get worried about him now. Everything else seems fine with him, eats drinks, drops normal.

i would`nt dart him on the same leg, because we dont know what the problem is, so lets say he's been limping because the trauma dart, i would try another palce

what have u used so far?

Ive given him 1.5cc of draxxin in his right leg. Which is the leg originally darted in.

I think scott is right, It may have hit bone, I did it once. my gun was leaking CO2 and i didnt know until I shot and hit way low, below his joint on his rear leg. He limped for 3 weeks on it but now you would never notice a limp today. I think you did the right thing by giving him the draxin if you are worried about possible infection, it wont hurt to give him a little just in case, it is a strong drug though so I would wait a while to give more, unless he looks like he is getting worse. Keep us updated.

Judt curious, what length needles do you use? Additionally, I prefer to shoot the front shoulder when the opportunity presents itself, because there are more blood vesles in the front shoulder to distribute the drug better and there is only the scapula to worry about which is pliable and much less likely to be damaged. This is my opinion, not the gospel.
