Help me with a buck who hasn't shed yet

So I have a 3 year old buck that hasn't dropped his antlers yet. He's a little tough to dart so I haven't done it yet, but sometime between now and the weekend I feel I should do something. If I get him down and find that he's got some new velvet around his bases, what should the procedure be? If I can't see any new growth I'll give them a little wiggle and tug, and I did read where someone had popped some off with a hamer and screwdriver. Any advice would be great.

i agree with robert i know of another. this guy has raised deer long long time. he just waiting.Dc

Thanks guys. I've had late droppers, too-almost always the same deer from one year to the next. That's why I'm confused-last year this deer dropped in February. If the new growth pushes off the old, won't that change his look with his new velvet?

I am still waiting for two elk to drop their antlers.........it was three but the one dropped his last week....they will give way to the new growth.....

I have one left with both sides still on everyone else has been off for a while.

By the way Dennis when you super glue elk antlers on to goats there is no telling when they will shed. You might have to put them down and use some glue remover.

Virgil sounds like your talking from experience.......thanks for the advice but I don't raise goats....only one fella up North of 80 that i know raises them he is a real weirdo.....you might know him he has your same last name!

I have 2 one with both one with one side.

put him in the shout and thy to pull it off ,on luck he still has it.

has about 2" new growth on the other side.

i wouldn`t worry about him.he`s just a late droper.it takes new growth to cause them to drop.putting him down could cause more problems.beating or hitting antlers may can damage to new growth. i know of deer right now still have old antlers.soon they will give way to new growth.robert

OK, RB-now I can see with binoculars that he is definitely growing new velvet around the bases. When does this become dangerous?

I don't yet have a camera that is capable of zooming on a buck that is elusive as this one. I think I've waited on this guy long enough-he'll be coming down soon if the weather and his mood cooperate. Thanks, guys, for the advice...

I was in the same boat until yesterday. I had my last set of antlers finally hit the ground yesterday afternoon. Will be interesting to see how he grows. Yesterday morning I had one buck starting to push a G3 and in the pen next to him one with last years rack. Will be fun to see if and when he catches up.

hi guys, our best breeder buck here still has both of his pedicles (we cut antlers after they shed their velvet) and we are getting a little worried about him as well. We are located in the south/coastal bend area of Texas and the weather has been different this year as far as we have had more rain this spring than the past 10 years and it has been around 80 degrees during the day on avg. but still getting chilly at night. The length of day is still the same.

The breeder of this buck said he was a late shedder but never this late. he is a 3 yr old as well. We've been told to try the hammer trick to knock em off if a simple wiggle doesn't work. We are concerned that he might start new growth under them and it will cause all kinds of damage and abnormal rack for next year.

Anyone else dealt with this before with any luck?

Thanks!

My Low Rider buck dropped his mid May the last two years but this year he dropped earlier with the rest of my bucks and is off two his best start ever. Low Rider was always a fast grower once he got going hopefuly your buck will be to. Keep us posted.

had one do the same thing 2 years ago had 8 inches of new growth and hard horn on the other was growing around old antler and i could not pull antler off it did finally fall off later and he had huge mass from then on

Well, I DO like mass! This guy had some decent mass on his sheds, but he's wearing little black pancakes on his head at the moment. It will be a good one for me to watch this year.
