Has anyone ever given a fawn an enema and had them hold it in? I have a deer that has not pooped in 2 days despite mineral oil and numerous attempts at stimulating her. SO... tonight I gave her a warm water enema with a little bit of soap and I quit when I got to 60cc because nothing was coming back out!!! It's been about 20 minutes and she is still holding it in. Any suggestions???

Never, they usually start shooting it out before you are finished putting it in. Are there any other symptoms, appetite, energy level, temperature (course you cant tell right after the enema) or anything else going on?

Liz,

You are going where no man has gone before. My guess is that the gut is twisted. In calfs we flip them over and palpate the gut. There is a protocol as to which way to roll them and I can't remember the correct direction to roll them. My history shows that I had a similar experience in 1992 and I rolled the fawn and stimulated it following the roll. However, in those days I didn't write down all the details and there was no mention of the direction or how long I kept it inverted. I really don't think it matters which direction you go, just be prepared for the inevitable. With 60cc of water and 2 days of hung-up poop, you are dealing with a live hand-grenade. Put on some goggles, get a garbage bag and make a poncho and roll it over and palpate the gut and see if you can feel the lump and blockage. I hope the grenade doesn't go off until you have the thing back on its feet. Good Luck! P.S tell Chris to get a closepin for his nose!
