There's no way we could TB test today. Eric went out to dart and they were running into fencing, injuring themselves.......

We use a CO2 gun because our enclosures are so small but it wasn't getting the range needed today.

Anyone willing to loan us their 22? IN A HUGE BIND HERE!!!

Dee Dee, CO2 is effected by cold air, try keeping the CO2 cylinder warm, it will help a great deal. Wrap a hand warmer around it or several if needed.

i know this will not help you right now but i have a suggestion for later. On most of my does I use a blow dart gun. Every day i use the blow dart gun to shoot them with peanuts. They come running to the gun after a while. So when i get ready to dart them I just hold the feed off and use darts instead of peanuts. It WORKS.

Put up shade cloth entirely around your smallest pen, dart from outside through holes in the shade cloth. The shade cloth must go up at least 6 feet high. We actually built a small pen with solid wood sides just for darting. Deer will not challenge solid sides like they do wire fencing. Believe me, it will be a night and day difference.

Thank you guys!

The herd is on less than 2 acres. VERY small enclosure...established before I got here. We've never had issues darting the doe's because they feed right outside the barn....Eric goes into the dark barn and shoots out the windows....never know what hit them. The boys are a different story....we've never had to shoot them...except one here or there with banamine or antibiotics. It was so windy today and he said they were already in a panic when he walked out. NOT a good day to dart.

Thank you on all the amazing suggestions!!!

That is a heck of an idea Brett. LOL! I do believe you that it works.

That is an Awesome Idea Brett........does this work more than once. Or do they catch on after doing it one time? I know one time with the dart gun and it never leaves their memory.

PS.....Deer Dee I feel your pain........and the worst part is it is all not necessary in my opinion!....wish you the best!

One other idea I saw on a farm os they had one pen designated for darting deer......in that pen they built a tower where you could shoot the deer from no matter where they were in the pen......they had curtains in the windows so the deer could not see the person or persons in the tower........and they simply darted the deer one by one.......I am sure they may still get spooked a little with this type setup as they will know what's coming......but they won't see a person walking around with the gun and that keeps them calm enough from crashing the fence.....this farm told me it works awesome.......just another idea.......

it works every time on my does. They usually don't even run off. I don't think they know what happened. The next day I shoot with raw peanuts again. I don't use it on my bucks because I try to keep them wilder.

That is a pretty sweet idea! Work with the animal's natural behavior...

I still don't know how I'm going to dart the bucks:( They're always standing at

the front of the pen when you walk in the back and if someone goes up to the

front to move them back, they panic......this sucks.....I only have a couple weeks

left to move these boys.

Anyone want to swing by and bring their 22?
