how early to vaccinate fawns

We have had 7 fawns born this week and only 2 have survived.  We are vaccinating after a few hours, IS THIS TO SOON?

We are using Bose, long range, vitamin A D E (sub q)and bovine equalizer (orally).  Our vet has used this for a long time and had termendious results. Seems like the mothers arent taking the fawns back after the shots.  We dont remove the fawns, just a few quick shots, tag and get out.

Had the vet out last night and everything else was great, no diease, sickness etc.  Fawns are born healthy and seem to go down hill after 6 -8 hours.

Any help would be appreciated.

Probably the Long Range shot. Would not give any injectable wormer to a new born fawn. Their little kidneys and livers can't handle it. You got some very bad advice from whoever told you to give a new born that! Hopefully it wasn't on here!

Sorry for the losses!

We have talked to other farmers who used this last year and had no issues, they actually said it lowered there loses greatly.  What makes you say never use it.  We are a new farm and are looking for as much advice and clearification as possible.  Thank you for any input!

I text one of my DVM's Jerri Lee hopefully she will post a response soon for you. Make sure you give mothers a couple hours to bond with their fawns before tagging etc. otherwise they may abandon them.

1/2 cc of long range and vitamin ade sub q

1 cc of bose sub q

4 cc of bovine equalizer orally

IF I give fawns shots it's usually 24 hrs or later. When I see them born I check *** and take a black marker and mark inside of their ear to identify them when I tag them the next day. Not sure of your does ages but sometimes first timers just don't know what to do anyway so usually space is the best thing. Deer want, like cattle and lots of other animals, to get away from the herd to have offspring and then introduce them back in later. We expect these deer to be bunched up and accept this. Sometimes space is the best.

I feel that the use of longrange or any dewormer at birth is a waste of $ and going to cause unnecessary stress to the animal. Most parasitic life cycles use plant growth or water in order to invade the animals body, neither of which fawns are going to consume for quite some time after birth. In my opinion the largest parasitic killer of fawns is Coccidia which longrange will have no effect on. This spring at apple creek we are giving our fawns 3 things, a shot of bose, a shot of our vaccine made from Newport labs, and fawn starter paste.

i'm no expert but our fawns get NO shots at this age. Just Fawn paste. i think the long range dosage is 1cc per 100

we vaccined and dewormed our does with long Range in March

WOW.  Thanks for all of the responses.  This has been very helpful.  Please keep the info coming and any other advice in raising fawns.  On a brighter side the 2 that are alive are doing great and are growing fast.

Thanks again!

We are just giving the fawn paste within the first 24 hours this year. It is the paste that Dr Ables developed due to the fact that it helps with pneumonia, since it kicked us hard last year on fawns. I am curious, the ones that have done this in the past, do you give shots later on or do you wait until the fall. We worm in our feed and add CTC as needed. Jada, hopefully everyone's advice helps you. It is no fun losing fawns. Best of luck.

The search option on here is awesome. It's in the top left. There is a wealth of information on fawn health available on there.

Hang in there!

I bought a 5' huge heavy duty pike dip net. I catch them when they are a week old &vaccinate. Then again I catch them at three weeks and vaccinate. Make sure to get a small meshed net bag or you will rip out ear tags. Another helpful tip is to bury 4' lengths of 24-36"culvert pipe lain horizontal on the ground about 6" in the ground. The fawns gravitate to them naturally for shelter and with another person to scare at one end they are the perfect shape for capturing fawns with the dip net to vaccinate. I am not an expert but I think the moms colostrum will destroy the effectiveness of any vaccine given directly after birth. Hope this is helpful.

this is our first year using DR Ables Fawn past, we wait to vacinate till after there weaned

my vet said it does not hurt them to vacinate at birth  but its a waste of money.. you need to get into the mom

Thanks again for all the insight!  It really seems that we have been handling them to early and mom is not accepting them back and giving them the colostrom that they need.  We are definately going to revisit when and how we vaccinate.  Also, mother nature is starting to spread some warmth and that surely wouldn't hurt anyone!

Are you in a selenium deficient area.  I believe 1cc is way more seleniun than a 9 pound animal needs. JMO  Heck that is what I give a ewe sheep that weighs 140 pounds.  I see no problem with the AD&E or the bovine equalizer.  If I do worm the fawns it is with one of the white wormers like Pancur, valbenzen or zolvix oral.  Fawns can be born with worms as they can get them in the womb from worms that just ended up in the wrong place and then infected the fetus.  If you have a good worm program not likely this would be a problem.

I have had does leave their fawns if I didn't leave them to mother up at least six hours.  I feel you might be causing your own problems with interferance too soon after birth.

I only give fawns a shot of Josh's vaccine at birth and have given up on all other shots as I don't believe they need it.  I try to allow my fawns a natural situation with their mother with little interferance from me unless needed.  Seems they do as well or better than when I gave all the shots and Vits.

Jack,

I agree deer are very sensitive to selenium and can be easily overdosed especially if a good selenium level is already in the local soils. I am looking forward to trying Josh's vaccine on my second round of AI babies. I am not going to give it to my first round. We have had some issues every year with lumpy jaw( fusobacterium) I want to compare results. I am also going to wait 1 week after birth to give Josh's vaccine & then again at 3 weeks. I plan on looking into Dr joe Able's paste. It sounds interesting a paste could keep fawns from getting either bacterial or viral pneumonia???

Bell,

I have used Josh vaccine and this will be my second year of using.  I used it mainly for the Ecoli as I had had issues with that for the last four years in my mule deer. My mule deer fawns at four days would get Ecoli and losses were bad but I can say it totally did stop that issue last year.  I also have had a minor issue with fusobacterium and it just occured to me I didn't have an lumpy jaw last year either.  I have used it on sheep, elk, whitetail and mule deer and results were the same, nothing but good to say on it.  In winter I used to get some pneumonia in my adult deer and that also was mostly stopped.

I did get my does all vaccinated this year twice but did want to put the vaccine in at birth on fawns but as you know there is a delay with production which should allow the vaccine to be sent out soon.  I will vaccinate all fawn as soon as we get the vaccine and then three weeks later.  Hope Josh gets it soon as It has become my main shot as the only other shot I give is overeaters Essential 3t.  Those are the only shots I now give.  We try to worm all fawns at three weeks of age.

Jack,

That's great news. I have zero confidence in the commercial fuso-vaccines.

Thanks much!

I also agree with Jack 1cc of BoSe may be too much. I have have given 1/2cc dose, and not had any problems, But was was warned that giving too much could definitely kill them.
