Hello everyone, I’m not a deer farmer yet but I am interested in what it takes to start farming. I live on 28 acres and am handicapped so I’m looking for something to keep me busy. I was raised on a ranch of 55,000 acres and raised cattle so I thought that might help me out with some of the things I need to do deer farming. Don’t get me wrong I know that it’s not the same but I think the work ethics should be close.

I hope that the others will chime in soon and give some starting advice, and what to watch out for. I do think reading many of the threads here will give you a good idea of how to get started. Welcome to the forum.

I would find 3-5 farmers that you can go visit and see their operations to see what may work for you. Always build fence and buildings with expansion in mind. You will have doe pens, adult buck pen, yrlng buck pen, buck fawn pen and doe fawn pens. Determine if you are going to gear towards the stocker/breeder market or the sale market.

That’s an intriguing statement! It sounds like you’re considering stepping into the world of deer farming. Whether it’s for venison, antlers, or simply the love of working with wildlife, it could be an exciting venture. Do you already have land or resources in mind? What sparked your interest in this field? I’d love to hear more about your plans if you decide to take the leap!
