I need help getting started with deer farming

Tank - this is a business that takes a lot of patience & time. If you go into this business expecting to be a millionaire the first year it won't happen. This market was down when we purchased our first 3 does. We were are the right place at the right time. The market is just now starting to take a turn towards the up again. We have been blessed to meet several great people from this business. The best advice is to plan on spending alot of cash up front. We have only been in this business since April 2009 & it is very challenging at times but also rewarding when you see your first set of fawns hit the ground. You don't have to spend alot of money to buy great quality deer with good pedigree's. It's attending auctions & interacting with the farmers out there who will work with new people coming on board. Good luck & have fun with it.

Is there anyone who installs the posts and deer fence in central pa and possibly build a handeling facility. I can find lots of people who can help me design it but not install it. Beacuse I would think without the right equiptment that would take forever for all that to be put up.

And another question. Alot of farmers are trying to sell this deer food in bags that "create antler growth". Im sure it is just a feed mill formula. Is this a secret formula? Or can anybody give me it? Then I could buy in bulk instead of bags.

I am in Western Pa.

Give me a call if ya want and let me know where you are and how much fence you are talking... I know some great Amish deer farmers that put up fence and could help ya.Maybe. (724)735-9924

Im not quite ready for installation yet im still in the information stage. But I will keep your number and give you a call when the time comes. Thanks

You could call and see there set up!

It is amazing...Yet not over the top expensive!...But very user friendly...

You need to visit many places to see what will work for you.

Every setup is different for every person. I was a single mom with two Kids so my facility and trailer ect...is set up different than someone else's might be A 120lb women can not use weight to her advantage much...

You need to figure out what Your needs would be.You need to think of your plan...and visit lots of places .You will say...Wow I like that...but this will need to change...Take a camera and notebook...and pick-up your phone and make Deer/Dear friends...there are alot of great people in this business.

...

If you can I would have different fields for different things...Rotation is the best.Since your farm is not bought yet I would look for land with Oaks and lots of brows. Not just fields...In my opinion.

My front field has tuff hearty grass that withstands and was marketed for horse traffic that way when we get alot of snow melt or rain...The grass doesn't all turn to mud and disappear.

But it is not the greatest for grazing.

Deer are not grazers but...they will so you need to watch with some Rye Grasses.
