Infected Eye

Just noticed one of our bucks appears to have an infected eye...our best guess is he poked it against a branch or was horned while eating recently. It's swelled completely shut and looks like it's been seeping quite a bit.

Any recommendations on treatment? He's not a calm buck and we definitely won't be able to directly treat it without tranquilizing him. Is there anything we can dart him with that will help get rid of the infection?

I have immediate access to Penicillin, Draxxin, and a small variety of other antiobiotics...just gotta know what, if anything, will be effective and how much to use.

Aside from the eye being swelled shut, it really doesn't seem to be affecting him...he was out grazing in the field and when we got close, he still ran just fine. Wasn't acting like he was in pain or sluggish or anything.

Thanks for any help!

If he is not showing signs of any major infection you might consider 2 or 3 cc's of banamine. That would help with pain and swelling. When darting with antibiotics, you have to consider what an effective dose is. Draxxin is one of the few that can be effective with only a 2 or 3 cc dose, plus it stays in the system longer. If he is showing no signs of distress, I would probably want to leave him alone but continue watching him closely. My wife, on the other hand, would probably insist that I dart him with Draxxin as a precaution. Whatever you do, just continue to watch him closely for a while.

Thanks for the info, we'll just keep an eye on him and if he doesn't start to show signs of improvement soon I'll see if I can't get close enough to hit him with a couple cc's of Draxxin. Might try the Banamine too to see if it helps him get that eye reopened.
