What would be the best treatmemt for a infected navel in a week old bottle fed fawn. He is still eating good and seems to be in good health, but his navel is swelled and a little puss coming out. Thanks M.T Whitetails

I would just try neosporin or something mild as long as the fawn is acting okay. Most important thing is to keep the flies away.

Edgemoor's ideas are good but I would also inject the fawn with Penicillin G per directions. I believe you want to get ahead of the symptoms and treat the source and cure the infection. Navel infections need antibiotics in my opinion.

Yes you don't want to mess around as the navel infections can definitly be deadly........MT not sure what you do when the fawns are born but we hit are fawns in their navels with iodine when they are born and this seems to help keep them from getting infections........sometimes its hard to get to them quick and they do get into dirt before being treated but the iodine definitly helps....good Luck!!

M T. If it is like a small donut around the navel it is caused from lack of colostrom.Had this happen a couple years ago on one i was bottle feeding. If a fawn gets infection from the ground being damp that infection will go straight to the liver or kidneys and kill it.

Thanks , to everyone for your input, i gave him some penicillin last night and today and put some neosporin on his navel where i got it to drain a little . He is still eating great and the swelling seem to be going down. I do put iodine on their navels as soon i find them but he was born in a storm and i guess he got some dirt in it before i got to him. thank again. M.T.Whitetails
