What the heck would cause a 12 month old doe to become paralized in the hind over night? There are no visable injuries. 573-517-1865 Jeff

Jeff, get a good dose of Dexamethazone into her. I won't say how much our Vet says to use because I am sure many will come on here and say it is too much so consult your Vet. If anything will help her it is the Dex given 3 days in a row.

I agree with the Dexamethazone. Load her up with it. I would move her away from any other deer to prevent them from stomping her. Banamine would also help some. Good luck with her

Is she bred? If so, the fawn could be pushing on a nerve, and if so, Dex could cause her to abort. If she is not bred, it is probably trauma of some sort, and I agree, give her Dex. Dosages can range from 1cc to 10cc's, or even more in some situations, which is why I am guessing stevel hesitates to offer up a dosage. There is a very broad range of appropriate dosages for a specific need, so it is hard to advise you on how much. Can you give more information or post pictures? Then maybe someone on here can help with a dosage.

Sorry, had to leave for work. She is not bred. OK, two weeks ago she had a broken tooth, I pulled it out and gave her anti's. A well known farmer seems to think the infection from it got into the blood stream which is called Septisemia (spelling)? This settles in the joints and creates stiffness. Today she was given 10cc penicillan. which I was told to repeat every 48 hours. What is and what does the dex do? Thanks Jeff

Moderate dose therapy will not have a significant impact on the immune system, but high dose/multiple dose sure can. It is a steroidal anti-inflamatory, where as a drug such as banamine is an NSAID.

Did you happen to take her temperature when you gave the pen? Also, don't forget the importance of probiotics with antibiotic therapies.

Her temp was not taken when the pen was administered. Though she has no fever now. She acts very alert, head up, ears up, keeps struggling to get somewhere. Oddly, when I massage along her vertibrea, she does not move until I get to the last few inches past her hip joints just before her tail, then she begins to kick her hind legs and tries to use them to crawl or get up, until then her hind legs are dead.

Also, vet said if dex is used, it will offset what the antis are for. Should I ignore this and use it anyway?

Last night I did inject 5cc of Baytril sub-q and 2.5 Banimine im. Is it safe to use the dex today? Will 3cc's per day be enough or does she need more?

Jeff this sounds like an injury to the spine. Can you palpate along the spine and feel for any abnormalities. Try sticking a small needle in her leg and check for a reaction to the pain. Are her legs cold? Has the doe lost continence or is she able to control her bowel movements? This can be done by checking for rectal tone. It could be a hematoma or swelling that is pinching a nerve or a fracture in the spine. Baring an x-ray this is pretty much a guessing game. I definitely agree with everyone on Dex. Also keep her well hydrated with subcu fluids.

Let's look at the symptoms..........Normal temp, alert, head up, ears up, etc. Not really signs of an illness due to an infection. I would addminister the Dex immediately due to the lack of movement and sensitivity to touch.

Late yesterday morning, she received 5cc of Dex and 10cc of pen. Temp was 100 degrees even. She also received 1000ml IV sub-q. She will get the same again today. She is still eating and drinking, but not as much as she should. The IV, plus what she is drinking, she appears to be very hydrated now. Though she is not using her hind legs yet. She is very alert. Tuesday she will get an x-ray.

X-ray showed broken vertibrea where the pelvis is joined. No infections, no fever, good appetite, drinking good on her own, well alert, very well alert, ears up and vertical. Happy as a 4 week old bottle fawn while she was hand fed. She just could'nt move those hind legs. How the hell could this happen? I'll never know. She has been euthanized.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and opinions. Special thanks to you Robbie, you are very knowledgable. Jeff

Wow - sorry to hear it. Just know that you did your best to keep her comfortable and nourished, and you didn't allow her to suffer once you had a conclusive diagnosis. I am sorry that we couldn't do more for her, and for you. I know it hurts to pour that much into one, and still loose them.

Jeff when we talk on the phone, I thought she had hurt her back in someway but you said you dont know how that would of happen. I am sorry for your lost. I know that doe was special to you

Sorry for your loss, Jeff. I know it is confusing and it hurts. My thoughts are with you.

I have a friend that comes out with the most profound statements from time to time. One day while visiting him at his farm we walked through his deer pens and viewed the deer resting in various places. He stopped and pointed at a group of does lying under a shade tree and asked me "Do you know why deer lay around together like those?" I looked at him and said "no, why do they lay around together like that" he stated "the reason they lay around together most of the time, is to discuss the various ways they can kill or injure themselves". Sometimes I think my friend was correct. I am sorry for your loss.
