Fawn has white discharge from the "front" of both knees(front legs). No apparent injury or sign of discomfort. Any ideas as to the cause and treatment?

Very little swelling, if any. No smell either. Discharge is about the consistancy of syrup. I assumed it was puss, but could not see any sign of injury and it is both legs in the exact same spot. Dont have any photos.

Mmanning sounds like Naval infection to me . That maybe sounds odd but often times naval infections settle in the front kneees. These types of infections either end up to be an umbilical abscess or an infection and pussing of the kness, sometime even an umbilical hernia. Antibiotic's and it may take awhile !! Just a thought !!

Wooden is correct! We call them pop knees. Comes through the navel. Treat with antibiotics. We sometimes also put pen. directly in the wound or a mastitis drug made to go up a cows teat, seems to help dry up. Vet will tell you it is caused from bad husbandry, just to make your day. They don't really no either! Would like to know if the fawn is on concrete? I have seen fawns right out of mamma with the pop knees so we have a lot of questions on this still and so does your vet. Wooden is right it WILL take some time! Good luck. ZZ

I feel like Ross, there has to be an internal infection and the naval is the most likely culprit. Don`t like to say too much about drugs and cc`s but it will need repeated does to get this under control. Good luck with the little one.

Well if you must know I have been up for 50 minutes! Thank you very much. Have people coming or would still be sleeping. Have people for the morning shift! I'm grave yard and like it that way. ZZ

How may babies are ya up to? More than I could handle I`m sure.

Your on the graveyard because they want you away from the public. :D

Keep those babies kickin.

I think you could handle em Mitch, we have none. I prefer to stay away from the public! We are a week away from fawns. We are on 178 days right now, last year we had quads at 176 days. Saved 3 lost a buck fawn. Doesn't feel to good losing 25% of the fawn crop from the git go! We have had A-I fawns from 176 days to 216. Biting at the bit to get things started. We are only doing 175-220 depending on the situation. When your done I'll still be going strong so come on down we can use ya. Over 200 head due at the same time, yaw. May get a little grumpy. ZZ

Hey there ZZ, I just asked Mitch this morning to say HI to you once for me but now with your postings I'll say it myself . Hello !! Been awhile . Wow over 200 doe's due at once , that ought to keep you out of trouble !! Well at least for a few months anyway !! lol Gee 216 days out from AI thats nice to know !! Have a good one guys !!

Hello Wooden, been trying to navigate the new forums. Hard on us ole farts that are computer illiterate. Post on a discussion go back and can't find it start cussin and walk away! Old dog new tricks syndrome. New people on the forums in the last 2 years got to watch what you say. Look at John on the roof on another thread. I tend to agree with him but decided, as you, to stay out of it. Let John be the arse this week. We have both been there at one time or another! You get kinda gun shy. That's why I don't answer all the fawn guestions, you know I have an opinion! We have done alot of study on milk and learned alot over the years. I'll use human as example, horse milk is the closest and cow milk is 7th on the list in front of baby formula 8th and look at all the kids that have been raised on that! If it ain't broke don't fix it! Sorry got off of subject so HELLO Wooden! ZZ

I hear ya ZZ , I too have a rough time finding where I just was on these new forum sometimes . I also know all to well about you got to watch what you say on here these days and to whom . Seems the more a guy wants to help or say something the more you also just want to read and stay out of it . Seems some want to turn this forum into a populartiy contest instead of a learning and exchanging of ideas forum like it used to be . Oh well I guess us old farts just don't like change as well as we used to ..lol Maybe the cows milk to our children is why we're like 32nd in the world for countries where our children live past their first year of life ! Damn you'd think we'd be first wouldn't ya ? Not to mention we're also in the 30's in the world for longevity . Dang near scarey ZZ ..lol Have a good one and good luck with all those fawns . Just a thought .

I am not looking to fight, but look at what I said and what was said back.

I hadn't even commented on or to John.

I am here for help and to help!

I still do not feel as though I have been mean to any on here, if so I sincerely apologize I did not mean it that way.

Painted , just let it go !! It doesn't matter if you post on here often you'll get into some scapes ! IT JUST HAPPENS ! Hell I try and try to push for more honesty and integrity in this business which is something I personally thought everyone wanted and I catch HELL for it . Let it go like water over a ducks back ! You surely can't please all the people all the time !! John's a good man so don't worry about it , no two guys /ladies will ever think exactly the same . It's good to agree to disagree we all learn something that way .

I would just add that if you are bottle feeding this fawn, you can add 1 cc of penicillin in the milk once a day for 3 days and avoid having to inject.
