Last july we had a late unexpected set of twins pop out of a 3yr old doe. We only have the button buck left.

My question is will this late fawn eventually catch up to where it should be or will it always be late in development due to its late birth. Along with his regular feed, We are still bottle feeding it though it's 8mos old to try to catch him up.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, just my opinion but you may be hurting him by still bottle feeding him. After the digestive system is developed they do not thrive on milk any more. The feed and roughage is going to be best. You may be making him eat less by filling his belly with milk. He should catch up but he may always be a year behind in antler development.

You think July is late! I had a fawn born on september 1st out of a 5 year old doe!

I already got his body size caught up with all the fawns that were born in May.:cool:So, hopefully his rack will grow at the same time as the others.

If my late fawn caught up, then yours will definitely catch up.

Thanks for everyones comments. The doe was bred by a buck that shed his antlers in mid jan. We thought,.......well,........................ he's safe so we put him in the pen with the two does for easier watering, then in the end of july,,,,,,,,,,,we got fawns inside the pen............Both does got bred!!!!!!!!!!!

The bottle feeding i think is going to stop as soon as the greenup begins, I appreciate both opinions and can see both sides of that issue.

thanks,

Jim

We had a fawn born Oct. 13 three years ago and she caught up just fine by 1.5 years old. Once we take our fawns off the bottle they grow faster. So I think bottle feeding a 8 month old fawn will actually keep it behind longer.
