My buck did not start growing horns until May. He shed his horns late April. Will he grow horns for a certain length of time or will he be cut short on growth? what controls horn growth?

Pretty late shedding Antlers, hopefully this yr better, genitics got some control,Some start finishing up end july some little longer, some through august that genitic pretty sure, late breeding caused mine late shedding he started late still growing on broke side. good side looks slowing down, Dc

Deer chaser they can and will keep growing through August...keep pouring the feed to him and he should finish up fine...........He may not have as big as antlers as he would have had he shed earlier but his rack will grow out and finish normal. I have a yearling i had to put down because he had a bad cracked hoof...this set him bac a little but he is really starting to pour it o in the last couple weeks........just i a week has has added four more point to his rack ad tines are getting longer!!

Hey Dennis come tell mine they need to grow through august! my yrlng pretty much done, turning dry looking little black in couple tines barely, but the most it over.for some not all. i seen nothing lately, except broken side still black on 2yr old.genitics and part of countryt i guess, DC

Here in the south, many bucks are harvested during the bow season (begins oct1) still in full velvet. I have several that remain in velvet until mid-late september.

Guys thanks for the response. Scott this is the same deer I called you about that had lost so much weight. The probios did the trick. He is putting the weight back on. Thanks for the help.

Our bucks grow at all different rates. Some start early and end early. Some start early and grow late. Some start late and grow late. Seems to be an individual type of thing. Though bucks that are out of certain doe lines seem to act similar.

We have one that we couldn't cut his horns and move him till mid october and another that looks to be almost finished now, aug 4. Is the largest horn growth late in the process or early? or is it always at the same speed? is each buck different?

I think the fastest growth frame varies, I noticed last year my bucks grew the most at the end of June, this year the put on the most growth toward mid-late July, some still are going strong, I am sure it will vary a little at each farm. I have one odd buck that hasnt grown at all since early July, his velvet appears to be changing color (drying) and I am sure he is not that far off from shedding it.

One buck that we have sheds his antlers around april 7th every year. Can northen to southern deer have different growing times?
