Hello all,
Been on these forums for quite some time now looking around for answers to some of my bigger questions but I kept running in to someone saying one thing while someone else was say the opposite... I wont name any names but I just thought maybe I could create a post that could help me clear some of these questions up... Im sorry if someone thinks this is a waste of a thread cause the answers are in the forums, but I did look around and Im just confused by all the different answers I have been seeing. Ill also try not to ask questions that can be answered by my state DNR.
First category was fencing enclosures:
- Wood or metal posts? Iv seen people saying go wood and Iv seen people say go metal. What are the advantages of either or? I can see wood being cheaper maybe but not last as long, and I can see metal being cheaper but lasting for a really really long time...
- Suggested size of enclosures and how many for starting a deer farm? Iv seen lots of different answers for this one... What do some of you think a good starting size is for a deer farm, and how many enclosures should one start out with as a rough guess? And whats a good guess at how much the total price will be for a fenced enclosure including posts and all?
Second category was what types of Genetics should I buy for the type of business I could get into:
Iv seen LOTS of different answers for this one, probably the one that has me lost the most. I have not chosen what I want to breed for yet but maybe your answers can help?
- If breeding for Genetics should I start off with high genetic deer? I see talk of how much you should spend on your first few deer, some say buy what you can afford, some say buy for $1000 a doe, some say go all out and buy each doe for $5000 and up...?
- If breeding for Shooters should I start off with high genetic deer? Same type deal here, some say buy what you can afford, some say buy for $1000 a doe, some say go all out and buy each doe for $5000 and up...?
Third category was just two random questions:
- Would any of you let someone who knows nothing about Deer Farming volunteer with help on your farm?
- Deer vs Elk Farms, whats the difference when it comes to cost and the ease of new person in the business?
I thank you for reading my book and I appreciate anyone who can answer some or all of my questions as I am really looking into this hard and am in desperate need for clear non-contradicting information. THANKS!
