lump on pedicle, question.

I have a tame yearling buck that has had a lump on his pedicle , it makes the pedicle appear almost twice the size as the other side. it is not getting any bigger it just appeared this size and has stayed this size but it has been a month, maybe more, since it appeared and its not going away. It appeared shortly after he hit the base of his anler on a board that suppports the feeder. I thought it was just a knot from the impact that would go away on its own. The lump is as hard as bone, it does not feel fluid filled. Also, I just noticed he just now started a little lump on the jaw on the same side as the pedicle, it also feels hard, like there is no fluid. It is only this size of a dime, or smaller, in diameter. Anyway I do not want to tranq him yet as he is still growing antler, but I do want to deliver the drug with a dart, what would be best to use? Draxin? Do i give it for several weeks? how much would you recommend? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

The lump on the jaw can be treated with antibiotics. 2cc of Tetradure administered IM every 3 days for 3 treatments. The pedicle hump appears to be bone structure, most likely a result of the injury you mentioned. I doubt if it will impede antler development in the future. In fact, it may produce some interesting deviations in the main beam later on.

I just took these pics today, I noticed some drainage in his nose. and he also wasnt being his usual tame self, he wanted to be alone. Anyway earlier today I darted him with draxin, just 2cc to see if he would clear up. When I went to feed him tonight he was dead. I just cant believe it, he got sick so fast. He was my first bottlefed ever. My favorite deer on the whole farm. I hope he didnt react to the meds. This is one of the worst days in my deer farming career, Its going to take a long time to get over his death, he was just so sweet, Always came to greet me, my only "pet" deer. I really feel bad because he died the same day I gave him meds. Was Draxin wrong to give. You will be missed Bucky.

Draxin was not the cause of death. A dose of draxin will not kill on it's own. I'm sorry for your loss, it always hurts to lose a deer, and usually the ones you loose are the favorites. The best solice I can offer is don't be too sad, you can make more.

Sorry for your loss antlershed. We lost our tamest deer this year and it's not easy. It will get better with time. Keep your head up. We have several bottle fed this year so that helped.

Sorry for your loss Antler.... I don't know if its true or not, as I very rarely use draxxin, but my Vet always told me draxxin will either help cure a deer or kill it. I'm not at all insinuating that draxxin was the cause, it just may be a coincidence of bad timing in this case.

Loosing your first deer is always the hardest - been in your shoes, just as everybody else that raises animals of any kind. It does get better and most importantly learn from the experience. That's all anybody can do..

Antlershed, I was just reading along looking to see what was going on with your buck and WHAM! You slammed me with the bad news. I am really sorry to hear what happened.

I sure would like to know what went wrong. Drug reaction, brain injury from the feeder, or what.

Two days ago we were feeding the fawns and Izzy drank her bottle and walked off to play with some others and then she come walking back over and gave me a lick. And then I saw her back leg. Somehow she had cut/tore the skin all the way around her leg and pulled it down about 2 inches. It was really bloody looking. Well I lost it! Not only is she my favorite doe fawn this year, but also one of the tamest ones. And she is the full sister to my big 2 year old buck Updraft. Needless to say I called the vet and they came and stitched her up for us. I was taking no chances with her.

Point is things happen, and it seems like they always happen to your best or favorite ones. Hang in there.

Hey Roger,

Remember when I posted with the same problem with a yearling that got hurt in the chute. Full rip around the top front leg at the arm pit area. It went down seven inches and looked real bad. Well I stitched it up and I'm happy to say you can't even see the rip. I hope you have the same luck with your favorite fawn.

Seems like the fawns will have these types of problems this time of year as they are just full of energy and make mistakes playing.

I had a fawn this week get a compound break from a fence injury. Had to put the bone back in and stitch it up and cast it. I just hate those types of breaks as they present more problems for the fawn. We are hoping for a good outcome on her.

Roger thanks for the good wishes.

I must thank you all for you kind words, I know its not only me that has bad things happen, we all do. I thank the Lord for every moment I shared with this deer. He was definatly one of a kind. I bought a bottle baby from a guy this year, she is only 2 weeks old, plus I had a doe fawn born last week that i am feeding, they sure make it easier to deal with his loss. Thanks again everyone.
