Gave a buck a shot of draxxin yesterday. Was going to start the whole pen on Aureomycin crumbles today. Good idea?? bad idea???? Crumbles were planned, draxxin was not. Would there be a bad interaction between the draxxin and the crumbles?

There should not be a "bad" interaction. If you don't have a pressing reason to start the crumbles today, and can put it off until tomorrow just to let the Draxxin clear through the kidneys before you add another antibiotic to their system, that would be my first choice. But, the two drugs to not specifically contrindicate, to my knowledge, so putting the crumbles out today should not cause a negative effect.

where do you buy Aureomycin crumbles? does most people feed this to their deer when the deer are in good health?

My first thought is what signs is the buck showing to need to dart him ? As far as reaction, I'm with Robbie on this one. What are the reasons you are doing this? Not a bad idea, just curious what was wrong with them.

Michael, I posted a couple of weeks ago about dogs terrorizing my pens and antlers broken out of the skull. This whole pen was hitting the fences. The crumbles were planned for shortly after that, but due to work and bad weather I couldn't get it done. I thought all the deer were doing well until Thurs. The buck that did the most damage to his skull suddenly looked like he was on his death bed. Hence the draxxin.

Robbie, I was told that Draxxin stayed in the body for up to two weeks, was my information incorrect?

Until recently, my herd has been on the smaller side so major health issues have never been a problem. Since acquiring more deer, I have had a few problems I had never encountered before and since my knowledge on medications isn't what I feel it should be or would like it to be I'm concentrating more on dealing with medications and treatments for my herd's overall health.

My top priority for the future is dealing with fawn survivel. I tag them at two to three days old and am trying to come up with better options for keeping them healthy. In your opinion, Robbie, what can I do at that particular time to give them the best chance of survival?

Thanks for helping Robbie and Michael

Sorry to hear about your troubles. You might have to knock him down to clean the wound.( If the Draxxin doesn't help) As far as your fawns, I tag all our fawns the day they are born and give the Target fawn paste and all their shots. I know many guys have a different protocal on fawns but this is what works for me

Draxxin is a long lasting antibiotic, which is why it is so popular among deer breeders. The half-life, how long it takes a drug to be metabolized and eliminated through the liver or kidneys, depending on the particular drug, is what always concerns me about "stacking" antibiotics, giving more than 1 at a time. There are some that work just fine together, and don't cause any serious problems to the eliminating organs, and there are some that "contrindicate" - should never be used together because of the way they react to each other and the damage they can do to the organs. Heavy doses or certain combinations of antibiotics can cause acidosis, or even renal failure. Tetracyclenes and draxxin do not contrindicate, however, when given the option, I like to allow one to clear the kidneys/liver before giving the next, just to reduce the strain on the organ. The residual effect of Draxxin is still effective in terms of fighting infection for several more days (even weeks in some cases), but the initial dose was absorbed, processed and eliminated in the first 24 hours or so.

As for your fawns, like Michael said, Target Fawn Paste as soon as they hit the ground, within the first few hours of life. I also give a C/D antitoxin shot immediately. If you are leaving them on the does, that is about all you can do, since they quickly get uncatchable. If you are bottle raising, obviously you have more control over their health. Let me know if you have specific fawn questions, or had any particular problems last year, and if I can, I'll help.

Thanks again guys.

Robbie, if you don't mind, I have a couple of follow up questions.

When talking about drugs that "contrindicate", how long until the second drug can be given? Is it "after the first 24 hours or so"?? OR, are they all different?

On the fawns, we had been doing very well until the last year or so. Things that have changed? I now tag at birth, over crowded a little, and too much rain. We have another pen thats almost done, that will be dryer and only used for the fawns. I'm debating going back to tagging in the fall. I've had some infections around the ear tags. My vet, not very good with deer, led me to believe that C/D antitoxin was no good, unless I was going to catch them two or three times. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that I'm willing to try anything if you think it will help. I would like to hear more about the antitoxin and fawn paste and/or anything else i could or should be doing.

Thanks again

Ok Willows here`s my take on these things !!! I do ear tagging at hours old to 3 days old !! I load the tag with neosporin before tagging and I have never had an ear infection !! Now my take on the Vaccines . Yes they do have to be boostered normally at 3 to 4 weeks. Now since I`ve had trouble with mother raised fawns and CD&T I`ve now changed to a vaccine called Alpha 7 which doesn`t need boostered until the fawn is a year old !!! 2 years now and no problems !! Just my take on things.

always love your take, Mitch, noesporin does work for me to. great info on the alfa 7. learn something bout everday.Dc

Thanks Mitch, that sounds like it would work the best for me. I really don't want to have to catch them again.

Scott, I'll keep that in mind. Like I said before, I've been lucky in the past and now I'm playing catch up in the meds department. What would you do for a buck with an infected foot? Probably got jabbed by something.

Thanks again guys.

Thank You Mitch, sounds like something the wife and I are going to try. Being new you tend to buy everything you hear about.
