I have been getting bit by the dreaded no see-um just before dark. Has anybody had ehd hit em besides south texas?

haven't noticed any yet but , Im afraid this might be a bad year.. i have noticed a bumper crop of flies in the fawn pens this year... i wonder if its from all the wet weather we have had this year...

Do any of you use garlic in your deer feed for flies? Does that work on midges also? I'm from NY and we here haven't had a problem with ehd yet. But would still like to know in case they do move up into our area.

I am aware of EHD in Louisiana, southeast of Monroe. I heard about it 10 days ago. I havent heard of any in Alabama, but the only folks I talk to in AL are my customers.

Jason,

He is talking about my farm, We are trapping midges in traps to try to extract the virus directly from the midge for a vaccine. I will let you know our results. We have traps set on farm and also down the road where we are not spraying to look at different concentrations of midges and the effect or our spraying.

I may indeed have the first case of ehd on my farm. Yesterday. Started noticing a young Buck wasn't acting himself just in lala land. Now I got in the pens spraying heavier than usual. Started burning some old down trees that were piled since winter. I have been in the pens all day. One of my best yearlings looked good all day and then this afternoon all of my bucks including him were laying around the smoke. I walked out there and he's squinting one eye. The meat around the eye is a little swollen and its watering a little. I'm like mother#$&*%@! Not again! Its almost classic! It could be he got some smoke or ash in it or both. He could have gotten popped by a snake, but with this being the second deer I'm not taking chances. Darted with draxxin. Not going to get much sleep tonight! I will keep you all updated!

I have seen EHD, B/T every year. Correct me, if I'm wrong.

EHD---First symptom= Dead Deer.

B/T---First symptom= Sick Deer.

Reed, not to disrespect but sometimes if your lucky and know Your animals you can see the fever before it gets out of hand! I believe my buddy at Elam woods treated about forty head as soon as they started showing any classic signs! There is a few hours that you get but the bad thing is you have to be there to try meds then its up to deer! By the way both yearlings look better. No more issues with eye. Thank God for draxxin!
