Does anyone have experience using  Medetomidine/Ketamine for drawing semen from bucks? If so, would you be willing to share your experiences, both positive and negative. Thank you in advance.

This last winter I tried to collect with it on one of my resident breeders. For some reason it did not work as far as sedation went. With vet standing next to me I darted the buck (who is an amputee) with a 200lb dose. After 35 minutes and the dart still in him she advised to dart reversals. I know this stuff has worked on other farms, and for another vet here in WI. I liked the theories behind it much more than xylazine/telazol.

He did get groggy but was still plenty alert. I did forget to mention, somehow, that when he came through the chute the following month he weighted in at 152lbs. I thought he was heavier but the scale is accurate. Not sure why he wouldn't go out, when collected on with other sedatives he has never been an issue. I should note that it was February, and dart was placed in the neck and not the hind quarter. No symptoms arose after the process either, feed consumption was stable.

I have used it with good success. Up and down just fine. Same as anything else. Not quite as smooth coming up as BAM lets say but  good.

Little bit off the specific topic here, but one thing I will never do again is use Ketamine alone. I was advised to use it to do some fixing on a fawn and the reaction while coming back out of the drug was scary nuts. Apparently it is referred to as the "ketamine crazies" and that sure fits.

I saw this same reaction on a group of bucks someone else was working when they topped off the bucks with ketamine to help keep them down. Their reaction coming out was unreal! Ket is some wicked crap and I will avoid using it!

Is there a reason not to use bam? I have used it and seen it used on many deer with no ill effects whatsoever. Putting bucks down to cut or fix antlers, darted does for Aiing... And the like all using bam. Might cost a little more but they are down way faster and after reversal they are back up in literally seconds with little visual sign that the deer was even down at all.

We used xylazine/telazol 4:1 hit our bucks with 3cc and had a very good draw on all 3 bucks
