Just had to fawns born this morning......they were born between 12 and 15 hours ago .......it has turned really rainy and cool here.....just pulled two fawns that were born yesterday and they looked wet cold and miseralble...they were 24 hours on mom though and I always pull at 24......but I'm thinking about pulling these other fawns as it really is cool and wet here and not really supposed to get any better till tomorrow.....what are your thoughts....give me them soon the sun is going down.....majority will rule!!

If they are out of that goat you call a buck i wouldn't even worry about it.

Dennis,

I hadnt said this on here for fear of having to defend myself but we check *** of our fawns as soon as mom cleans em up some and determine if we want to pull it, if so, it goes with us then, most of the time we're theyre waiting. I think you'll be fine. The protocol will be a little different though. We do our basics to every fawn born but all the ones we pull get first fawn in every bottle for the first week. May be overkill, but its not gonna hurt.

Virgil, Your the best............Live oak thank you.....anybody else.....come on let me know your thoughts the clock is ticking and i'm going to need to make a decision quikly!!

Dennis,

Knock on wood, the only time we have lost fawns is when they are born during weather like it is today. I presume from the cold rain and dampness they get wet (or never dried) and hypothermia sets in and they die till morning - more so on the runts or smaller ones in my cases.

This is one of the scenarios (if it was a little cooler and raining all day) where I will pull fawns and keep them in the house or barn overnight, then put them out the next morning. Mom usually meets me at or close to the gate....

Honestly I think they should be fine, as its not to get real cool (upper 50's) here tonight. But if it makes you feel better or if its to rain all night, you may want to bring them in for the night and put them out in the morning.

Good luck,

John

Dennis

I have dealt with this Two different ways depending on the doe.

We had great weather for three days in a row...I was watching storm move in on radar my AI'ed doe also was... she fawned ,One hour later it started to rain and I mean...RAIN

I ran out and stuck the fawn in a dog house in her pen and blocked it in...I let it out after the rain... it worked great.

I have a doe that will take a fawn no matter what...So when she fawned it was bad, I let her care for them and then would take them in and take them out later for her to care for then collect them again...

If you have a spooky doe make sure you don't handle them much or smell like dog ect...Or she may stomp them.

You know.....I just don't have a good feeling about them out there......I know they have both had a good shot of moms milk.......I am going to pull them as I have experienced the same thing John.....like you said, they will probably be ok.......but I did not sleep well last night and I don't need another sleepless night.....will sleep much better with them here in the house with me!! Hope it's the right choice!!

Dennis,

Looking at the weather outside here, I feel I would be doing the same thing, whether it is the right choice or not... Sometimes you just have to go with your gut feelings....

Good luck,

John

Yeah they safe and sound in my bedroom under the heat lamp right now......i will try to give them some colostrum in a little while when they settle down a bit.......man it is a lot harder finding a wet fawn than it is when they are nice and dry .........Thanks everyone for your input........

Dennis, wish we had some of your weather down here right now. 7:30 and 102 outside....

Dont know exactly what the high was but it was hot with a hot wind. Usually we dont get days like this out of the blue, kinda works into it...... It has an effect on some of the deer and the rest act like its just another day, I imagine tomorrow the fawns will be introduced to the mister, thats always fun!

good luck dennis let us know how it goes we usally pull at 12 hours and it's been easier to get em started but that's just us hope it goes good for you W/S "JUST LIVIN THE DREAM "

I also try to pull around 12 hr mark. Then feed colostrum supplment for 24 hrs. In certain situations I have pulled almost immediatly and fed Manna Pro Colostrum supplment, per package instructions for fawns, with great results. Good Luck Dennis , I would have pulled also. Allen

Thanks Allen.....yep thats the same thing there getting.........manna Pro........thanks again everyone!! They both took the bottle first try.....ate a couple ounces each wish it was more but they will get better at it!!

I hate to do it but I always follow my gut now. I nearly lost 4 fawns to a situation just like yours. Now, I will always follow my gut. We do the unheard of though, we bottle feed everything now. So the choice is a little easier when it comes to pulling the fawns. I like 24 hrs but in a pinch 12 or so will do. On tripletts I really like to keep them out for the full 24 though. You probably made a real good choice pulling them.

Well I pulled those two fawns and I am glad i did....they both have the scours pretty bad...no blood but pretty watery yellow scours....these guys are only about 30 hours old.....how should I treat this? Right now I am still in the fighting stages of getting the fawns to take milk....they are geting about 2 ounces every two hours.....what are your thoughts?
