I have heard every different angle and many make sense? I just don,t want US to end up like a lot of these other industries that no longer exist! I am not looking for a long drawn out debate...we all know that they get us no where from many of the past threads!nI truly am concerned about the direction WE as an industry are headed! Look I have a lot more invested than some and a lot less than others in this business....this being said, I want to see US make it! I want to see what the general consensus is regarding the chase for the largest buck! Yes it is fun and to be on top is always the best! At least for ones own bragging rights. But are we doing what is best for all of us in the long run? Hey, like it or not we need each other. Can we get to the point where there are too many.......well, my opinion only...I think we are there.....but any anyhow, this is about where we are headed as far as the bucks we are breeding for......I have heard many things like we are not being good stewards to our deer because they can,t even hold their heads up.....and that could lead to the antis using it against us. Another thing I hear is they don,t even look like a whitetail is supposed to anymore.......i hear what happens when we have so many of these huge 300 to whatever inch deer that nobody can afford to pay for...this will lead to the huge deer having to be sold for less which will drive the prices down the whole way down the board......again, this all just food for thought....I am not trying to make anyone out as a bad guy for shooting for the top as far as largest inches......I am guilty myself ........but after thinking about it long and hard I personally think we may be shooting ourselves in the foot...opinion only! Anyhow, this leads to my poll! please vote with confidence that nobody will be able to see who voted for what...this cannot be viewed and no one will no how you voted. Vote with your heart.....and by all means comments are welcome!

That's pretty simple...To many deer will bring prices down....To many bigger deer will keep raising the bar...150 used to be big and now 250 is average..Prices will reflect with size.. I really dont think our problem all rotate around our deer...Alot of our problem's we bring on ourselves in the way people are treated and taken for a ride on different thing,s that they do.As one guy said not to long ago..If some of the crap that goes on in the deer world... Went on in the real world..There would be some old time killin in the street type stuff. Everything comes full circle sooner or later and the ones that do the shafting will get called out..You will never win with the anti's and the non believers...So all that is left is us and with the cut throating that happens between us...Well sooner or later there will be less of us! Then the ones the leave will bring more ammo to the non-believer's!! As far as the poll i didnt vote but i guess i would pick the first part of number 2 but not the last!!

Good points. Like we've said before - this industry is driven by the hunting market. We need to have what they want and we can tell you they want every type and style. Some request a crazy nontypical and others are looking for more typical frames. Most hunters just want something that is balanced and not too narrow. We get a lot of guys that start out telling us they want a typical buck and they end up shooting something totally different. When they see it they want it. Variety is the spice of life and the mainstay of the whitetail industry.

Most people will pay to shoot an elk, but usually only one because they all look fairly similar. But people will come back and shoot whitetails for many years because they are all so different.

There is no doubt that variety is a mainstay in whitetail industry. However, more people shoot smaller bucks than larger bucks. There is more demand for them because the price is lower. The prices on smaller hunts haven't dropped nearly as much as on the higher hunts. For example I got this off a hunting preserve website:

"Up to 145 SCI – $2,500

146 to 159 SCI – $3,500

160 to 179 SCI – $5,000

180 to 199 SCI – $7,500

200 to 219 SCI – $10,000

220 to 239 – SCI – $14,000

240+ Inquire

Specials do NOT include white or pied deer.

Regular Pricing

Bucks scoring up to 145 B&C – $2,800

Bucks scoring 146 to 165 B&C – $5,000

Bucks scoring 166 to 180 B&C – $7,500

Bucks scoring 181 to 189 B&C – $9,500

Bucks scoring 190 to 199 B&C – $11,000

Bucks scoring 200 to 210 B&C – $13,000

Bucks over 210 B&C are individually priced"

As you can see the up to 145 class bucks have only dropped 10.8%

While a 200 class deer has dropped 23.1%. Economy and unemployment will continue drawing the price of large bucks down to what the average person can afford. It's the future....

Also with all the top genitics of today it wont be long and there will be no such thing as a 145 inch deer...Unless its a yearling!!! As most wont sell shooters untill two and three or older.Wont be long and your smallest hunts will be 200 inches and they will be priced as todays 145's. Hence breeding ourselves out of buisness with 300,400,500 and now mabey 600 inch deer. The bar goes up!!!

I personaly like a buck that look's like a whitetail, he has to have a typical frame there that you can see. Add all of the exrta inches you want to that typical frame as long as you still see the whitetail look in there. If you look at most of the big buck's 450+ some still look like a whitetail some dont. I will only use the buck's that do, I pick the buck's I use more by there typical frame over total inches. The smallest buck that I am breeding with this year is over 300" the largest is over 500" but they all still look like a deer should look to me and have a great typical frame. I dont think that you will ever see a 600" buck that will have that. As far as the shooter's I think they need to have the typical look.

Sure the price to hunt a smaller buck hasn't dropped, but the cost to feed it sure has increased. That is why there is no way to make profits on whitetails under 150". unless they are yearlings, but who the heck would want to shoot a thin necked yearling on a preserve, believe me there are hunters that do care about bady size/condition as much as they do rack size.

I think you should stop using the term "monster" for a start.

Or why not use freak,or mutant as well if your into that?

The antis love it.

Whitetail is indeed the species. I thought you meant the adjectives used in front of whitetail. My bad.

Yeah that's what I kind of thought too...what is the big deal about using any of those adjectives when describing a large whitetail. Not a big deal if you ask me.......call them what they are.......what do they call a huge truck......"Monster Truck"!!

If the objective of this thread is to discuss the public/hunter acceptability of these heavily selected deer,is using adjectives like monster helping the industry?

Sharkey,

Im sorry but I just don't see where there is a problem with calling them monster buck...I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

G'day Dennis

As "a bit of a deer tragic" I don't like seeing negatives about them.

I just think calling them monsters raises a negative.

The anti's use frankienstien deer a lot now,I don't like that either.

But then I don't like breeding away from "type".

How lucky are we that we live in countries were we can agree to disagree,& still be mates.

Cheers sharkey
