NADeFA Update - August 22nd, 2013

Your National Association Working For You

The NADeFA Board and I have maintained for the past year that we support moving forward with the working group to address our concerns with the Program Standards and to follow through with the comment period to address any additional concerns that we may identify when the Standards are released for public comment.

NADEFA will notify all members when the standards are published and will provide a link so comments can be made.

NADeFA supports the 90 day comment period.

If after all that process, we do not agree with the final product, we will move forward with options to withdraw the Standards completely.

The Board voted unanimously to contribute $25,000 to the Brakke lawyer fund to help pay for the legal battle in Iowa.

NADeFA is working with state associations in New York, Florida, Missouri and Louisiana to keep borders open.

NADeFA is working on its website or a link that could give weekly updates to its members to keep them better informed of what is going on in the industry and what NADeFA is working on.

NADeFA encourages all members to express their concerns to any of the board members or the executive director so they can be handled promptly. We have always had an open door policy and will continue to do so. Our members are very important to us and so are their concerns.

This is a step in the right direction. Remember--bottom line. Those who pay the bills make the decisions or it doesn't work. Let's get through this together and forget the good ol boy ****

I have been at both of the meetings in Mo. and spoke to the board of reps. at the second meeting, so as you all know that I am not blowing smoke. I didn't see Shawn or Will there.

You are probably correct, and my opinion of Shawn is that he is a stand up guy, but this seems to me to be crunch time--I really don't want to be posting on here as a former deer farmer. Wild Rivers, if you were in Mo. you would be the same way---I hope you would.

I posted for him since he's got a lot on his plate. Also I'm a Nadefa Board member and wanted to make sure someone from the board responded. Darren we are In the fight with you in Missouri and want to help anyway we can. That's one of the reason at the Dream Ranch sale we had 5 donation lots to help Missouri. If Nadefa can do anything to help in Missouri let me or another board member know.

what could be more important ,as president of NADEFA than this at this moment? surely Shawn can take a few minutes at his computer to comment. Sincerely, a guy waiting in Mo. to lose his right to raise whitetails

Darren, Shawn called me today twice and left me a message. I returned his call and we had a good talk. He did express to me exactly what is in that letter and much more. He expressed to me that he will be in Jefferson City for Meeting Number 3 and he expressed the need for us to unite and show a strong presence at the 8 meetings that the MDC has scheduled with the public. Some things I did not totally agree with but he expressed the ACA and everyone involved in the process conceded that the process for the standards must move forward....troy:(

I will be there for the third meeting, just like the two before it. I plan to be there to voice my opinion just as I have at the two prior meetings. I hope to see Will and Shawn there also. It is time to pull together and win this thing. Then it can be used as a reference for battles in the future. Darren

Well said...

Will, When did the money get approved for the Brakke lawsuit? Seems kind of strange it gets approved when the membership turns the heat on NADEFA. Good for NADEFA. Long time coming.

As a NADeFA member, I appreciate Shawn’s message. I would like to respond on an earlier comment regarding the ACA’s position on the standards. The ACA’s position is only what the majority of our 29 associations say it is. The ACA voted 24-0 on April 9, 2013, to allow the negotiating process to continue negotiating until the Standards Working Group concludes. The working group concluded in June.

The ACA has made a long list of concerns regarding the product of the Working Group, known as Version 22, with many council members labeling a dozen of the concerns as “deal breakers.” To me, I think the definition of “dealbreakers” means if they are not fixed then the deal if broken. In this case, the acceptance of the standards.

The ACA and everyone in this industry is waiting for the announcement of the public comment date. We plan to have a vibrant display of submitted comments.

I personally think every association needs to identify your “dealbreakers” so we can evaluate the document that is unveiled for public comment. That way we can have a clear determination of our success. We don’t want to hear political terms we see in the news like “its good enough” or “we can always improve it in the future.”

The ACA has voted recently to inquire our options for the standards if our “dealbreakers” are not fixed. Our industry is being asked to sign a 56 page contract with the government. I think it’s high time we identify our “dealbreakers” up front and in black and white. Otherwise, I wont sign.

The ACA convenes Tuesday night.

Four Seasons Whitetails,

I am sorry you are taking these questions so personal. I do not make a post to attack anyone or any association. I have been reading this forum for quite some time. I have posted about the standards and about the Brakke lawsuit. The standards are detrimental to the cervid industry and I for one am against all of the government regulations that are imposed on this industry. In the NADEFA magazine, NADEFA claims to be the official voice of the cervid industry. On this forum it has been stated that NADEFA has not helped the Brakke's lawsuit. Now, after this past week's posts, NADEFA has made a response about approving money for the Brakke lawsuit. Seemed coincidental to me but I am glad they approved the funding. That is why I made my post. I do make phone calls. The heat I am talking about is the four state deer associations that wrote letters to NADEFA's board stating that they were unhappy with the way NADEFA was handling the standards process.

Mike,

It came straight from the horses mouth to me about 2 weeks ago there was NO contact ever made by NADEFA. And i am not afraid to sign my name!

I have only been looking at pictures for awhile and just came by today to see if there were any worthwhile announcements. Its almost funny to read this. First of all Blondie I sent you a pm awhile back about participation in your own state and never got a response. Second, I told you Will that no matter if you agree with them you are still attacked because it is about the drama. You have to realize that is what some people thrive on. Third, Darren there are more hotspots than Missouri and I wish there were more troops to send and I just get sick of all the people letting a couple of people do all the work for years and get mad when they haven't taken care of the potential problems before they arise. NADeFA has never agreed with the standards as written. The plan has always been to kill them if they are not acceptable in the end. I know what was said while I was on the board and I personally have heard Ray explain it on the linked associations calls. Maybe some people don't want to hear what is said because it might stop the fighting. Why would Shawn come here and say anything. He would only be attacked just as I will be as soon as I post it.

Travis, very well put. We have to do be able to identify each part of the standards that we don't agree with and not leave any grey areas. It will be hard enough for all parties to come to an agreement. When it is done, hopefully everyone can live with the final product. It needs to be addressed now. Changing the standards in the future--because we got lazy and didn't do our homework, can still be avoided at this point.
