Hi everyone. I have to tranq a fawn in the morning and my vet would not give me rompun, as he said it will kill fawns and adults if hit in the wrong spot. He won't take any of my advice on doses, meds etc. My wife went to pick up the drug today and he didn't tell her the name of it and I haven't been able to get ahold of him since. He gave 0.1 cc of whatever it is....is this enough to do anything at all?? I don't want to stress her out and make her hurt if the dose won't keep her down etc. The reason I ask is because when I had another fawn injure her neck, I asked for dex and he would only give me 0.1cc of it....which I later found out would do absolutely nothing. He also said he will never give me banamine....as it will kill deer. I told him that it is a regularly used drug in the deer industry, but he still refused. Sorry to post so many issues....I'm just new to all this and want to do the right thing. I feel that I've already waited longer than I should have

Thanks

Derek.Sounds to me that you should find another vet ! Having deer you should build a good trusting relationship between you and your vet.You should have a bottle of Rompum on hand when you are raising deer. 3/4 to 1 cc should put down most fawns. You should have Tolazine reversal to get them back on their feet as soon as possible.

Yes Derek....need a new Vet....your vet obviously is not interested in having you as a client.......you need rompum and tolazine if your going to deer farm......I suggest you take a safe capture course on how to use these drugs as well as they can be dangerous to humans if not used properly.......good luck! Hope it works out for you.....

I use 1/2 cc Rompum on fawn's, that will put them down or alway's has for me. I hate to dart fawn's but at time's you have no choice.

I would want to know what it was he gave you before you use it on your fawn.

I also would look for a new vet that will give you what you need.

Derek,

I totally agree, you are going to have to find another vet. You will not be able to successfully medicate your deer in a timely fashion, and from the sounds of it, or in a theraputic fashion either.

No need to apologize for mutiple questions/posts. It is the very heart of why these forums exist. And there are plenty of willing hearts to help you out...anytime and always.

But beware of the SharLanuffy....:)

Hope the best for ya Derek!

Thanks so much everyone! We meet up with our new vet on Monday. I will keep everyone posted on how I make out. This forum truly is amazing.... With some equally amazing people taking part in it. Ps....it's crazy for me to even hear you guys say that I need a bottle of this or that on hand. We have to drive either 30 min or 1 hr to one of our vets clinics, just to pick up 0.1 cc of a drug. We werent even allowed to have 2 shots of the tranq drug at one time....have to drive in again in 3 days to get it. Not a CHANCE of getting a bottle of anything. Although I bought long acting penicillin at my local farm store. Lol

The only thing I could think of that might work in that dosage is "Sux" and I WOULD NOT use that for any reason on deer ever.

I am sure there are lots I drugs out there I don't know about but that is a wicked one and used by old school guys still.

I don't know the spelling but I think it's succinylcholine.

Without him telling you what it is I wouldn't even attempt to use it.

Beware of Sharlanuffy?? Lol. That one went straight over my head mark!

Ya, I will definitely not give her the drug until I hear back from him. 0.1 cc literally looks like nothing is even in the syringe

Just wanted to update everyone on our fawns situation. We managed to catch her in our catch building today, without Tranquilizing her. I gave her 1.5cc of long acting penicillin and .5cc of dex. The sore above her hoof was opened up a bit and had started to drain a thick yellow puss on its own. I gently squeezed quite a bit out of it also. It all went pretty smoothly and once I let her back out, she started to eat leaves right away...so I don't think it stressed her too much. My plan is to catch her again in 3 days and repeat the process. Does this sound like a good plan? If I can't catch her again, my tranq gun should be here and I will put her out I guess. If I put her out, I'd like to soak her hoof in a salt bath, as recommended on this forum.

Thanks everyone

Catching a fawn is always prefferable to sedating it. Your vet most likely gave you 0.1cc of phenol suxicoline (sp?) commonyl known as succostrin. Do not use it on your fawn unless you are prepared to oxygenate it and do cpr until the drug wears off. It might be a better idea to give it to the QUACK you call your vet. The issues yopu list with your vet proves that some vet students do make D's in college.

Derek,

You probably weren't on the forum yet when ''SharLanuffy'' came to be...or should I say ''almost'' came to be. It's quite a touching story, so you better have some tissues handy.

Ya see Derek, quite some time ago...and not known by many...there began this intense love affair between what started off to be just two individuals, then escalated to three(more on this 3rd party in a minute).

Oh sure, they were like most couples at first...they fought from time to time, and sometimes actually quite fiercely...but it only took their love for each other to a much deeper level each time they fought, cause then they would make up, and we all know how intense ''making up'' can get!

When realization had set in and it had become obvious to all those in view of this ''voracious'' love affair that a union was inevitable, yes marriage, there began some thought. Since each of the lovers owned and operated their own deer business, a name of the combined 2 deer businesses had to be conjured up...it only made good sense to do so...the marriage seemed so assured!!!

I mean to say...it would bring tears to ones eyes just to read their posts back and forth to each other. Hallmark itself hasn't even ever come up with some of the heartfelt verbiage those two lovebirds spoke to each other. It almost reached the point of sickening...but they were in a deep deep love!

Then..and oh then...the 3rd party shows up.

Well...at first they all got along, and it looked as though this whole trinity of love thing was going somewhere(strange I know).

But then, and actually quite soon into the relationship, jealously reared it's ugly head...and things began to spiral downward and fall apart quite rapidly(excuse me while I grab a tissue).................

I can't really share any more details than that, only that I know that she has currently walked out of his life forever because of his incessant and uncontrollable jealousy over another deer farmer. Out of his life...but not his heart...he cries all the time!

It's pitifull...truly pitiful...

Of course by now you're wondering about the 3rd party.

The third party, whom was largely responsible for the breakup...well...let's just say...they feel pretty ''down and under'' right now.

Well Derek, that should bring you up to speed. It's pretty much the whole story in a nut shell with as much detail as I dare divulge.

Hope this helped clear up the mystery of ''SharLanuffy'' for ya.

Have a great day Derek!

You two are hilarious! Mark, how did the tranq go?

Scott...it went very well on the 2nd try when I ''reversed''(pun intended) the order of drugs.

And Scott...I will pay you $500 to never let Dennis know! LOL

Mark,it surprises me that you would display this "trolling" behaviour.

Are you OK?

Cheers Sharkey

Wow. Possibly more confused than ever. I'm assuming that sharkey and Lana's vet don't see eye to eye on the forum??? I'm missing the uffy part I guess. Oh well, I guess it will remain an inside joke. Definitely entertaining though! Lol. I should clarify that the vet did tell my wife what the drug was....she just forgot and I can't get ahold of him. I threw it out anyway and am meeting with a new vet tomorrow.
