Make a long story short we had someone (still trying to find out who) break into our pen well we were gone for xmas. My buck was gone and had the sheriff out to fill out a report and figured who ever did it shot him and took him. Turns out they just broken into the pen and left it for them to get out as my buck showed back up. We decided the only chance we had to get him back was to dart him even with it being very very cold. Yesterday was able to dart him early in the afternoon and brought him into where I put a good bed of hay down and put a sleeping bag over him. It took a good amount of time to get him moving and coming through but finally at around 815 last night he was up moving by himself even though he still looked drowsy. Well didn't get much sleep but this morning he was much more alert and was drinking and saa him feed but still looked off maybe a bit on the sore side. My question is after this amount of time should he be in the clear or should I be still worried about losing him?

I agree worry and take precautions for pneumonia.

That was also my question what drug you used for sedation. BAM should have been a snap to do that with.

I will have to check on what I used. Sorry but still knew over all to raising deer and this was the first time I needed to dart a deer and had help as far as getting the gun and dart I used from another deer farmer. I should of thought of treating for pneumonia as precaution. I did keep a eye on him today and he looked very good and no worse for were. Hope I dodged a bullet with him with how cold it was after reading how many deer guys have lost darting in the cold.

You can use the same dart gun to administer the antibiotics as well.  You don't have to sedate him again.

I have had some problem with pneumonia because I did A.I. and the temperatures went down to zero.  I found a new to me anyway a product called Zupremo and most of that antibiotic goes to the lungs and fights pneumonia.  Small doses but lasts 21 days so I darted some that showed signs of pneumonia and they have recovered very well.  Just my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback. Jack I will look into Zupremo to have on hand. I'm still working on getting a list of medication that I should have on hand. Been keeping a very close eye on him and he still looks good and no sign of anything wrong with him. Seeing it's been over a week now is it safe to say he should be fine?
