I have a friend that is having problems with a buck of his that he is not quite sure how to treat........the buck was doing fine and eating good a week or so ago......he would bring them sticks everyday to nibble on and this guy would be the first in line to get them....then he noticed he wasn't coming over to get them anymore but he seemed fine otherwise........well he has noticed now that he just doesn't look good and he has lost some weight....the other day he noticed a white mucas coming from one of his nostrels........he does not have a cough and is not weezing at this time.....Please let us know what you think it is and how it should be treated.....hate to lose any animal but this one is really one he does not want to lose.......any help would be greatly appreciated..........time is a facter here as he is not eating like he should.

Early EHD? I have 8 with EHD and lost 4 so far. Two of them have showed these signs. I have saved 3. 5cc of Dexamethazone, 2 cc of Banamine, 2cc of B12, 2cc of Penacillan and 5cc of Baytril. If I catch them early enough and they dont have 50% or more Northern I can save them.

This deer is way up North though....it would be the first case of EHD in that area ever....plus we have had a very cool summer which usually means no EHD....

It doesn't seem like a lot of info to go on. I know your saying no coughing or wheezing but without any other info to go on I would go with assuming pneumonia and treat with Draxxin. I personally would go heavy on the dose and give at least 3cc IM with a dart. If he has a drop chute I would go with 3cc IM and 3cc SubQ. I would NOT tranq the deer to administer drugs though.

But this is just me.

I also would assume like Roger pneumonia as the deer sounds like it has lasted too long with sickness. I would think if it had EHD for that long it would be dead without treatment. If you dart I also would use Draxxin as my first choice and Micotil 300 if you can get close to it and do it by hand. It would be bad to stress the deer by sedation as this would cause lung stress.

With pneumonia wouldn't it be coughing?? What is the best aggressive treatment for this.......ZZ how much Nuflor??

My first thought would also be resporitory issues and I would go with Draxxin. Be sure to follow up every couple days for atleast three doses. Good luck

Dennis, when in doublt treat. Sometimes if we wait for the very noticeable signs that there is a problem it`s too late. Just because there is no cough doesn`t mean it`s not there. Time to get it under control is before the sure tail signs. He who hesitates has lost is my moto. There has been good advise given here on how to treat. They will all work. Little signs, Didn`t come for treats, doesn`t eat much and not as active. Those may be the only signs a deer may give if it just doesn`t feel well. Good luck.

I'm in with ZZ. Nuflor, Excenel or Excede would be my choices. I think the label calls for shot placement at the posterium of the ear. He would need to be in a chute or tranqd for this. I would not try to dart him with any of these meds as they are very thick and you may not get a full load in him. Draxxin and Baytril would be my follow up in the treatment plan. Good luck
