I have been breeding deer for about five years, I have never given fawns any shots of any kind, should I be? I have always let nature take it's course, so far I have been happy with the results. But I know alot of breeders will give their fawns several shots. Just looking for what is best for the animals. I have heard of people giving their fawns Barguard 99 to prevent ecoli. Is this needed. Also any advice as to what if any shots, oral, etc... I shoul be giving?

I purchased some higher end bred does that have had fawns, and I am just looking for some input, so they are healthy. Thank You Todd Tacey

If you have had success with your current protocol I would stick with it!

The old saying stands true!! If it aint broke...Dont fix it!!! I think alot of times we cause most of our own problems..I know i have...Like josh said before. These things are for the most part perfect when they are brought into this world!!!

I agree, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I also think that the longer you have deer on a particular piece of property, or if you let your numbers get a little too high, things could change very quickly.

I did not give any vaccs this year or last, just a tube of probiotics to each newborn, and some barguard to a couple born in the really damp conditions. If you dont crowd your pens and have good runoff during wet periods, then there is no need. I only lost one out of fifteen last year, this year is far from over but so far so good.

they might have them

we use ecolizer c20 at 1 cc by mouth at less than 2 days of age and strong iodine on navel and ear hole when tagged. fully vaccinating these youg fawns can wreck the maternal antibody protection they get from their mother's colostrum.. Therfore, Vaccinate does to promote strong healthy colostrum!!

We worm does 30 days before fawning season (although probably waste since no rain in Texas), 3GS first catch, .5 cc Bose, .5 cc Vit AD and then let mama take over.

Thank You for all the advice. This forum has been a wealth of information for me. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Todd Tacey

Todd - Last year at around 5 days old I gave all my mother fed doe fawns the following: 2cc Alpha 7 subcu, 3cc C&D antitoxin subcu, 3cc of Ecolizer+C orally, 3cc Probiotic paste, .1cc of Draxxin subcu, and .1cc of Ivomec+ subcu. I did all 22 doe fawns this way and never lost a one. So... I'm one of those guys you hear about that gives shots to his fawns. BUT, I did this because I was walking out in the pens in prior years and finding dead fawns periodically. So, I totally agree with everyone else - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just keep a watchful eye on things, cause like Willows n Whitetails said, things can change very quickly with the longevity of deer being in one spot and/or overcrowding. Best of luck to you!
