I am new to the business compared to most of you, but have been doing research for over 4 years....yet I never asked, so I figured I would ask you all now. How often do you guys think owners lie about their bucks' ages? Example, a buck scores 80" at 1, has a good pedigree, then scores 170"@2....so they lie and say the deer scored 170"@1. Of course this is not good business and if anyone ever found out their reputation is GONE, and in this business, that is everything I would think....

However, I'm sure it's happened and just wondering what your all's thoughts on it were....Do you think it happens often/still happening? Any ways to be sure your getting the truth from the owner? Record, sure....but as in any business, and especially this one, where payouts are seen with high scores at young ages, many people take the risk if the reward is high enough.....

i dont know how often it happens , but i just started in september 2011 . and it almost happend to me (if i had not of caught it i would have gotten it ) .Im not 100% sure he meat to or just got confused with what he was telling me .

Most can tell a deers age by his looks.A yearling has a yearlings body reguardless of rack size.Whe they are between 2 and 4 could be tricky but it would not matter then. Most farmers are hunters so its pretty easy. You need to work with good people and do your homework because trust me there are soom out there that will take you deep. They are far and few between for me so far but there has been a couple i have dealt with in the 2 years i have had deer.Needless to say they know who they are and they know they will never see a check with my name on it again!!!

Wow, silly me, I was just naive to that. I was happy i thinking most in the business are pretty honest, especially with each other.

I would say most are . From what little i know its tough enough out there . sure would'nt want to ruin a reputation that way .

It is too bad that there are people out there that lie about the size or age of their animals. I have seen it first hand. All you can do is sniff it out, and choose not to do business with people like that.

I have only been in this business for a couple years but have had the privilage to meet alot of great deer farmers with only meeting 1 that was a crook i will not mintion their name but if you listen to the person talk and pay attention to the deer they are talking about you should be able to tell if they are telling the truth. I would also try and find out if anyone has had any trouble with that person not holding up to what they say they will do ect. thats just my thoughts Hope everyone has a great year Nick http://daywoodwhitetails.com

Well,

In texas, there is a lot of lying about ages, genetics etc... I usually either get shooters or genetically proven deer. But, the only way to keep from getting taken is to become an expert. and even then it can happen. I know of a few very honest deer farmers, and I tend to do business with them, even though it costs me a bit more. Relationships matter, and long term relationships are fairly precious. That being said, I try to judge the other man's character before even judging the deer.

Just my opinion,

I am fairly new to the business but since you tattoo & ear tag every deer in the first few months I would think it would be difficult to change the age of a deer after it is recorded. DNA should take care of genetic questions. I would like to see a certified scoring system. There are alot of big deer in Texas. Is everthing bigger in Texas ? Most proud Texans think so.

Circle,

All good texas breeders use some sort of northern genetics or have deer with northern genetics. Our native WT are pretty small in body. But, you have to admit that the texas whitetail hunting industry does a great job in promoting whitetail hunting...

As for scoring, most of us use SCI gross scores for deer. There are lots of certified scorers if you wish. B+C makes you age the antlers (IE off the deer or a dead dear) for a few months to score.

I won't take the bait on the bigger in texas comment. But, we do have a lot of HUGE deer as the competition in the industry is quite fierce.
