My family is interested in high fencing a few acres and raising a small group of deer.

We own recreational land a couple hours from our home. We would like to setup pens there but we couldn't be at the property every day to look after the deer.

Is it possible to raise deer this way or do we need to live at the property?

We would double fence and use large gravity feeders and automatic waterers. The property is very secluded.

I would advise against this. Too many things can happen and with deer, it will. They should be looked after and inspected everyday to ensure health, automatic water systems are working, gravity feeders are not clogged by dead birds or blocked from raining ruining the feed at the end of the tube. Fences should be inspected daily. The deer also get used to you quicker and get more tame when someone is in the pens everyday. it will also be a mess for fawn season. They need to be cared for all the time.

I live 20 minutes from my deer and see them every other day except i see them on saturday and sunday. There are days (fawn season) (EHD) season that I drive down everyday. I wish I could be there daily.

I agree with Deep Rooted Whitetails. With you being a couple hours away it probably isn't realistic for you to go there even every other day. Is there someone close by that you could hire to go check on the deer, feeders, waterers, fence etc. every day? I'm assuming your deer would be located in northern Wi so snow removal amongst many other things could be a problem during the winter. I personally want to be in my pens on a daily basis to visibly check on there health along with the obvious reason as I love being around them. To give an example, about 3 three weeks ago I had a fawn (not bottlefed) eating treats out of my hand and perfectly fine one night to having a broken back leg the next night.
I am also in Wi. Feel free to call/txt with any ?'s or stop by. If you are to figure out something that works for you, I don't think you will regret it. A lot of great people in the industry. Unfortunately, this forum doesn't get used nearly as much as it did previously, hence the lack of responses.

You need to be there in case a buck gets hung up in the fence or a fawn gets stuck. Need to check on water supply regularly too even if automated. Need to check for predators like coyotes digging under fence.

In the North probably be ok but wouldn't have bucks I cared about together or sharing fences.

In the South (draw a line across the top of Oklahoma) I would not even enter the business if I had to do over again. If you must, then buy deer from a farm that has had a recent massive die off from EHD or fights its every year.

What makes you say that?

Sharing fences they will fight through them break antlers and if your unlucky die. I've never met a farmer that liked letting bucks share a division.

If you are in a truly EHD prone area you will likely never turn a profit.

I recently rescued a fawn off the side of the road after witnessing the mother be hit by a truck. Ive hand raised goats but never deer. The first few days he was with me he was kinda stable. He would try to walk and was alert. Now he has no use of his hind leg, and acts like the muscles in his neck dont work. When i pick him up he flops around. Hes on goats milk replacer but honestly prefers cold water he will guzzle it down. Ive given him a Covexin 8 shot which i found on another forum. Any suggestions please help l.
