I know this might sound like a silly question but does any one feed there deer pecans in the shell. I got back from work today and one of my buddies had thrown pecans in my deer pen, I rake them all up and took out all I could find but I dont know how many they may have eaten. I know the shell of a pecan is very hard. I told him not to even come around here unless I am here to see what he is stupid enough to do.

Yes, but Brett you have a paper shell pecan tree!!! LOL

Thanks Brett, I know they probably eat them in the wild some places. I just walk to my pen and saw a bunch of pecans and they were eating them and I saw one doe crack one and it look like she may have hurt her gums or something because she let it fall out of her mouth. and that freak me out a little dont need blood coming out the back end because someone gave them something other than what I feed allready.

Deer eat bark off of trees, and pine needles, as well as hickory nuts and fruit and pits of all kind. I think they'll be OK...

Cassie, I understand your initial concern.....But..........I would be MORE concerned with the NUT who threw them into the pen.............Than the NUT it's self!!!!!:D

Thanks everyone for your response on this.

Wayne, You are right and I have adressed the problem, I told my wife not to let anyone go by my pens unless my partner is there. And I will put a sign up also. No feeding deer without me.

When feeding peanuts in shell how do you manage the micro toxins that may infect raw peanuts? We too have used as treats in past.

We haven't had any problems. We aren't feeding gallons of them, just a few handfuls now and then when we want the deer to come up so we can get a look at them.
