I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, if it's not I'm sorry but I think it pertains to ranch and farm management.

I realize that natural predation is a common occurrence, however it is very disturbing to see predator populations get so out of control. Here in the southern states the coyotes are devastating our deer herds, as is the newly injected wolf in the western states. We as stewards of the land have a responsibility to manage all types of wildlife, be it predator or prey, to its best and highest use and to maintain a balance.

I have posted a link to the Ranch blog where I have a link to over 200 game camera pictures that shows very graphically what over population of a predator species can do.

I agree. I have done my part in previous years. This year seems to be especially worse! They are terrible around here. I'm going out this morning to help out the situation! We all have to maintain balance in all we do though-Jason

If you are hi fenced you can put predator wire around your fence and kill off what is in your property and your problem is solved!

Here is a very inexpensive device that really works, its called a night guard predetor control, its a small solar run bright blinking light and it really works on **** coyotes and bear, I have a couple and love them!!!! Henry Martin sells them. Good luck!!

Golden Marlin is great, but seriously... it will kill ANYTHING that ingests it!! (And mixing it with Coke works well around here.) Be careful about where you put it and who knows about it; if you start killing off pets it will hit the fan. Small animals will often die with their heads in it!

The predetor control unit works well for certain animals, give me a call and we can discuss anytime. I have sold many of these over the past 3 years or so.

Golden marlin I hear is pretty awful stuff.......someone I know watched an animal die that ingested the stuff and said it was the worst thing he ever witnessed.......I realize these animals are causing problems and are very annoying.....but honestly I think there is. Better way of eliminating the problem other than using this stuff......just my opinion......any animal that drinks this poison dies a horrible ....horrible death.......I think we need to be more respectful to these thes critters when exposing of them.....

Predators have been and continue to be a big problem in my area. A neighbor of mine had coyotes in his pen last week and they killed and consumed a very tame doe that was a family pet. Twice this summer I had coyotes catch a yearling bucks. The first one was my son's bottle raising project "Nick". They caught and ate him alive. I found him the next morning with a big part of both hind quarters eaten. He was still alive. I had to put him down, then cut his head off and take it to my vet for a CWD test.

That will test your compassion for coyotes.

Sorry to hear that story. That one would have been heart wrenching.

I've no love for the coyote, in or out of the pen. Out of the pen, they eat an exorbitant amount of fawns, rabbits and rabbit nests, turkeys and turkey nests, etc.

I'm in the NW corner of Illinois, and 35 years ago a coyote was unheard of, and there was plenty of red fox. Now it is just the opposite. Grey fox are gone too but I'm not sure we can blame the coyote on that one.

But yeah, the coyote makes it pretty easy to dislike him!!

Snares make real quick work of coyotes. Used properly, there are an incredibly effective tool. But like I said, used properly...as in being careful to put them to where they will only target coyotes. Tight spots in woven wire are great, and if they are not tight enough to ensure a deer not using that spot, then tighten it up to ensure that.

An electric fence would probably be the best remedy around the deer pen.

Sure hope ya never have another one in the pen!

Wow bmays do you have added fence along the bottom of your 8ft fence??? That should not and does not have to ever happen to anyone. Pm me if you dont and i will fill you in on what i did. All the yotes do at my place is walk the outside of the fence.......

Untill they find the treat i have waiting for them... No disrespect DD and i hear where your comin from but somethings just have to go reguardless of the outcome!!!

I hear you guys.....I too hate the Yotes....they serve no good purpose...........I do not have any of the problems to the extent you guys have and it has got to be very trying on your nerves........I had issues with rats in my barn and I fed them lots and lots of poison pellets so I guess that was not any different than using the golden marlin........it is unfortunate though as Mark said.....it is not the yotes fault they are just trying to survive.......but they have obviously reached an over populated level to where they need to be controlled!! Sure would think the wildlife and game commissions would step in and help.....but then again they like to stick their head in the sand and pretend there is no problem.....bmayes I wish you the best and hope you can find away to protect your animals!! Good luck!
