I have a two year old that kept closing his right eye and his right ear was drooping. I dont think he poked his eye, didnt see anything. And he is still eating. Just not moving around much. Anybody have suggestions, or have had this happen?

?? infection in the lymph nodes behind the ear (necro), eye is a sign of pain, treat quickly with the usual antibiotics. pic??? hate guessing

this morning he looks to be better. Im thinking a collision with a tree or one of the others kicked him. I was thinking ear infection last night but im not so sure this morning. Ill keep you posted. thanks guys

ok, we picked two deer up this morning and when we got home the buck is blind. I have called around and found one guy that had something similar to this happen. He said his buck lost his horns and got an infection inside deep and that was putting pressure on his eyes. He treated with 20 cc of Draxxin and the buck was all better. Our buck's eyes are all foggy.

any suggestions would be appreciated

Just an update. We put the buck down yesturday. Examined his spine and head area, and everything looked fine. Gave him 15 cc of Draxxin, Banimine and vitamin B. He is in the barn so he doesnt have to travel for feed. Not very optimistic but we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Thanks everyone

Strong antibiotics for that deep an infection. He's probably not blind yet, the white your seeing is puss behind the eye blocking his sight. Its 50/50 he gets his sight back though. Good luck!

traci, i was on the phone with penn state yesturday and they said the same thing. I did see improvement last night though. He looks like he has some of his sight back. Before he was walking real slow so he didnt hurt himself when running into things, but now he is moving faster and last night i didnt see him run into ONE thing. So were keeping our fingers crossed!

Great news! He might also of had equilibrium problems causing him to be off balance too much to want to move. Haha

Tonight im positive he can see. How good, im not sure. The cloudy in his eyes are down to about the size of a humans pupil. So its shrinking and im excited about that. His one eye is still bulged out some so I know there is still a good bit of pressure. Tomorrow im planning on giving more Draxxin.

Did you say that you gave him 15cc of Draxxin? Is there a limit to how big a dose of Draxxin you can give? I've got a two year old buck with what looks like a bad infection in one of his back feet. I've given him two doses of Draxxin, but only 5cc at a time. He's not healing like I'd like to see. Any advice?

The vet told me to give 20 cc of Draxxin on sunday when i put him down and 8 more 5 days after. I only gave him 15cc and plan on giving him 3 tomorrow and 3 Friday. There is no limit with antibiotics from what ive been told esp. when there deer is going to die otherwise. Many vets have told me 3 or 5 cc's before, but that is just not enough for bad infections. Also when you give large amounts, put some sub cut and some right in the muscle.

I would check with a vet before I mixed antibiotics. The draxxin administered sub q will stay in his system for a couple of weeks. If he is improvimg I would be catious about adding more drugs. Is he eating and drinking?

Yes, he is eating and drinking good. With an infection as big as he has, I have to stay on top of it. Penn State said if I let him go a day too long without antibiotic the infection will kill him. According to Dr. Donnely, which is one of the best deer vets around(from what everyone has told me) you cant overdose a deer on atibiotics. I also talked to another farmer that had this same thing happen to one of his bucks, and Im following the same steps he took to cure his. He said his buck was in the barn for 4 months. I know its a lot of Draxxin in one week, but ive talked to MANY different vets AND farmers before I did it and got thier opinions. Its keeping my buck alive and looks like its curing him too. He was actually playing a little yesturday!
