We are fairly new to deer farming compared to some of you all out there. Just a small operation but looking to take the next step. This year we have purchased our first power doe witch gave of 4 fawns. Bought our first straws of semen. So past the point of no return we are looking to make a nice run at er here in the next year or two. But need A little help but have alot of questions:

How long is the process? If parents are tested do offspring need tested? Cost? Does it make a difference to buyers? Will any vet do it? Were can i get more info/ litterature?

It was side tracked a bit because of some people feeling we shouldn't test for Bruc but it gives some answers or insight to what your asking above. I don't disagree by the way that it is stupid for any testing of Bruc. But in order to do business and to provide the best experience for our investors we are Bruc tested.

The cost question will depend on you, your herd, and your vet. Most charge by the hour so how ever fast you are...well there you have it. That said NEVER rush your self working deer. That is a sure way to lose and animal and cost you even more money.

The state has certain requirements before your herd can become TB/BRUC certified and accredited, including how the testing is administered. They also set forth guidlines for recertification/reaccreditation every 36 months. If you only want part of your herd to be tested then any part that is not (for instance shooter bucks) must be maintained a certain way so as not to have contact with the other pens. You must follow the state guidelines or your testing will be all for nothing. Contact Mary Martin with the PA Dept of Agriculture. She was very helpful and will tell you everything you need to know. Her number is 1-717-783-5309. She will also tell you what happens when you add deer to your herd.

If you need anything else, you can email me directly.

Thank you i did scim thru this thread. But am still unsure is this a 5 year program like CWD? Is it one and done? Is it a Great selling point to preserves?( worth the cost) Does the state Ag dept. have more info do i start looking at vets? What would be my next step?

sorry you all i was typing while you all were postin so you have already hit some of my questions. Thank you

As long as you can legally move a buck from your farm to a hunting preserve there will be NO benefit to you to be Bruc Cert. The only benefit is if your wanting to move your shooters out of state, and the state you are wanting to move them to requires a Bruc test to move them.

Otherwise preserves don't care about pedigrees, or herd status as long as you have a place to move your deer to and can legally do it.

does this increase the value of the animal. Say selling a shooter test vs one that is not?

It won't increase the value of the shooter buck except that is may open up more potential buyers to you because of your ability to move the animals. More potential buyers could mean better prices. Again a shooting place doesn't care about a bucks pedigree, or herd status as long as the deer can be legally moved from point A to point B.

As a side note, I would never tell a hunting ranch what a shooter bucks pedigree is. If your selling them a buck to hunt they don't need to know the pedigree. Why sell them a shooter buck for shooter prices just to have them use the buck at their place as a breeder on their farm because of the deers look and pedigree.

In Ohio it is a 3 year cycle. Every 3rd year you have to test the whole heard.

im in Pa. they come in, they test, When the test comes back negitive am i Cer. or do they wait the three year cycle to clear you?

Thank you all i just got off the phone with Mary Martin and i got everything set up that i need. Thanks again for you alls time
