I noticed a small red spot on my best buck's rack about 2 weeks ago.

It looked like a small scrape, dime size or smaller. I watched it for a few days......no real change....no flies.....just red.

There are 5 small spots now, mostly on the inside of his g-2s and 3s.

No flies. Barely scratched, but raw.

It looks like he might me scratching/rubbing but I can't tell.

He is very healthy and content, in a nice pen with 4 smaller bucks.

Any one have anything similiar?

Should I be worried?

Thanks

I have two bucks with the exact same thing, also on G2s. One is a yearling and one is a two year old.

If you can get fly spray on the deer i would spray him.......especially his rack....flies are your worst enemy when they expose the antlers.......you don't want antler infection that is for sure. Good luck to you all!!

I took these this morning of a two year old, It was looking better last night and then this morning he had it scratched back up. The yearling i have is about healed up. I tried to get close enough today to spray with blue coat but didnt succeed.

Thanks ER,

That is what mine looks like. Won't the flies become a problem?

I saw a video on YOUTUBE where a very large velvet rack had to be removed because it was full of maggots.

I'm afraid anything that I manage to apply to it will just be rubbed off, and the added stress with me stalking and spraying him is not good.

I just wonder how serious this can become.

thanks for all the replies.

Every effort should be made to prevent flies from getting to the wound(s). Some ideas are a garden sprayer filled with a permectin mixture or some other "safe" insect retardant. If you can get close enough you could spray the wound with one of the aerosol products available from your local farm supply. CAUTION do not spray in the eyes or down into the ear canal.

How about a water mister spraying in the pen and then maybe add some kind of insect liquid to the mister system? Just wondering as this is something I have considered but not done yet.

On Backrubs

What kind of mixture of fly spray are you guys using on the backrubs. I made one this weekend and soaked with a permethrin and water mixture but it would dryout right away in the breeze. Ive seen on here in the past about using mineral oil or diesel fuel mixed with permethrin or permectrin, which combination works best.

David sprays with a big fogger on his tractor but they also make really nice backpack foggers that you can aim up in the air and have it float down over the deer.

I know we have already had to put one buck down 2 times to make sure maggots hadn't become a problem. Thankfully not, but you can never be too careful. The first time the buck scraped it on the fence and the second time one of his tines split open from growing too fast.

I know one time we added mineral oil with the permethrin/water mix so that it would stay on the buck longer and I wouldn't do it again. I think it prevented his skin from releasing heat and did more harm than good.

Guys anytime you have a buck that you think flys are going to lay egg on the wound on antlers . Trust me this will save your buck , spray the tip to the base of the antlers with pour on Ivomec, then on the wound apply Swat, And another thing start worming with pour on Ivomec on your feed like the 1 st of July . Lay your feed out on a tarp and spray your feed with it, feed next day . You apply 4 times as much of the body weight of a deer Make sure you used probiotics when you worm. I saw horse fly land on a back of a deer , he flew off as fast as he landing.

Thanks for all the replies and advice.

The raw spots look better. They heal over rather quickly, and then he opens one up again.

A few more weeks and I won't have to worry.

thanks, Jamie
