red deer question

a buddy has a small herd of red deer on his place. He has found prolly six stags dead in the last three years of unknown causes. Found in June, November, January. Some showed sign of struggling , others not. Five of the six were three year olds, on spike. No dead females.

Dosen't seem to be any pattern there.

I know fallow deer get some diseases that whitetails don't. Don't know much about red deer diseases though.

Any suggestions?

The only thing I know about Red Deer is they taste good.

Has he had any autopsies done on any of these boys? I know many times the money spent seems like it was flushed down the toilet. But sometimes they can tell you what you need to know as well. I would tell your friend the next time take it in the second he finds it and have them do one.

I know Red Deer are really aggressive, they will fight to the death and die of exhaustion, some hunting preserves in NZ only offer Red Deer or elk, not both because the aggressive little stags kill the bigger elk

they are on a large enclosure and haven't been found in time to check.

haven't found any in Oct, one in Nov. Don't think it is rut stress.

It could be flukes, if they are on low ground or were in the last year or so. We have had some trouble in the past with liver flukes in fallow deer and red deer. Most of them died in the winter after the infecting flukes grew to adult size. Since, then we have been using valbazine (sp) wormer and it seems to do the trick.

First question............

Are the reds the only species in the enclosure? Are there any elk or fallow there?

Second Question..........

Other than all of them being bucks, is there any other similarities in their deaths? Location, Temperature, etc?

Third Question.......

Does the owner worm the reds? If so which wormer does he use?

Hi Scott..

Whitetail, three Fallow, Axis deer, handful Sika. Never any elk. had more fallow last year.

dosen't seem to be any pattern. two in June, one Nov, one Jan. No signs of puncture wounds on the ones that were found early enough to tell. No sign of scours, Jan one had small blood on mouth. One in Nov had struggled after down.

worms with Ivermectin pour on on corn, and Safeguard cattle pellets in the feed.

had half dozen Fallow bucks die year before last, unknown cause.
