I have a 3yo that ripped one of his drops its still attached but has some velvet hanging looks to have stopped bleeding should i be concerned or will it just heal and keep growing funny Thanks for your help Nick

You need to be concerned with flies and antler infection....very deadly if you don,t stay on top of it .......good luck!

I have same thing on the biggest deer in my facility. Its been hanging for like two weeks already ......I would just leave it ....to drop on its own.

flys arent to bad sence ive been adding garlic to the feed just didnt know if it would heal and keep growing or if it would make him start rubbing the velvet off

if it looks as if hes getting an infection what should i do is there something i can put in the water or feed i dont have anyway of putting my hands on him Thanks again Nick

Since you said you have no way of getting your hands on him I assume you don't have the ability to tranq him, and if that is true, I would encourage you to get a dart gun so you will have it for the future. If you are raising deer, there will be a day you will need it - no doubt! I personally have had bucks break their antlers from time to time, a small part of, and I never did anything and they were fine, but that doesn't mean you won't have trouble. If guys are saying you need to do something right away, then you might want to listen to them, cause they have probably had the problem they are trying to save you from. If you come across the ability to get your hands on him should it be necessary, and some say it is, then I would rub a bug repellent (with deet) around his head, face, and ears inside and out. His ears waving around with repellent on them will help keep flies away. CyLence is a product many recommend, so I would apply that to him. I would also liberally apply an antibiotic cream all over where you cut. And of course give him a shot of your preferred antibiotic. But yes there is an antibiotic you give in water - oxytetracyclene. It is a 5 day treatment that comes in a packet that is good for 120 gallons of water for the theraputic treatment of deer and is sold at Farm&Fleet, and you have to dump out daily what they don't drink and give fresh. I am not recommending this product for your situation and I'm not saying you shouldn't use it, just saying it's available. You can also pick up CyLence there as well. Good luck!

Nick, Keep a VERY close eye on it! With the heat they are forcasting for this area it wont take long for the flies to get in there and lay eggs and cause big problems fast! If you have to put him down get yourself a box of FRONT LINE for XL dogs and apply a single tube of it between the ears and down the back of his neck it will really help keep the flies away from his horns while it heals. Good Luck if you need anything just call 660-646-9099

Do what you can to cut down on flies since they are the troublemakers. I've posted before about the fly traps, but they really work. We put out some gallon jug sized ones on Friday and they are already half full today, Sunday. Unbelieveable! Those are flies we've taken out of the equation. Our deer have a some flies, but nothing like I've seen some places - or even like we used to have. These really help and don't cost that much.
