Sharkey,

The shear size of elk and red deer compared to whitetail makes the crush a better option. The drop floor chute is standard whitetails and other smaller species.. I guess my point originally was that while having remote drug delivery systems in place on a farm is important, a well crafted handling facility can reduce they need for darting tremendously.

The above statement reflects my opinion that if I were in a position were buying Class 3 drugs was difficult I would be using my handling facility all the time.

Thanks Curtis. My vet says that it is illegal for her to sell me any amount at all. I asked her for one dose, to tranq my fawn and she said "not a chance, it is very illegal and I'm not risking losing my license". I asked for a rompun, ketamine mix.

Thanks for your post!

Thanks josh. I have avoided sedating the fawn so far. I've given penicillin 3 times now and drained the wound the best that I could, without stressing her too much. Still lots of puss coming out when I squeeze it. I just don't understand though....there is no spot where it looks like she has stepped on a nail or stick, yet everything I read about foot rot says that it is caused by muddy ground etc. My pens are literally all sand and we've barely had a drop of rain all summer. I will continue trying to squeeze it and give the penicillin. How long should I give it? Is it possible to give it for too long?

Thanks again

Thanks Josh, its always good to see how others do things.

There's no way I could manage my deer off the end of a dart gun,yet I couldn't manage without one either.

In some new yards which I'm building at the moment I've put in an old early 80's drop floor. The reason is because its faster than the hydraulic for drenching, tagging, etc when large numbers are being worked, even if a carousel or Magee handler is fitted. The walls are adjustable & it can handle antelope to elk so much faster,& without the risk of jumping. It's funny how the old becomes new again.Still, for a straight velveting operation a hydraulic job with carousel would no doubt save the odd few sticks from downgrading.

Cheers Sharkey
