Round Open Sores?

I'm really hoping someone can help, I've been finding numerous open sores about the size of a dime on a lot of my fawns. In most cases they've scabbed up and healed over but I had one case that kept getting worse and it was the size of a baseball when I finally had to sew it up. I don't have any of these sores on the adults. I've treated with anitbiotics and I don't think it'll be life threatening but I'd sure like to know what's causing it? I had about 120 fawns this year and I've had these sores on about 1/2 of them.

It sounds like a fungal infection we see occasionally on fawns. Try an antifungal such as tanactin. Rick

Sounds like it could be injection site cyst. If it is they some times get sick again about 2 weeks after the site opens up. Poor things, those have to be painful.

My dog is covered in such sores due to the straight Baytril injections she received. The Baytril really messed up her tissue. More keep emerging, but so far, her immune system is fighting it, and she does not have a fever. Certain young or small animals have sensitivity (reactions) to such strong drugs. What helps them also poisons them... just terrible. I really think we need to look at more holistic therapies.

VETERICYN WOUND AND INFECTION TREATMENT Spray for Animals (found at TSC) has worked well for keeping these wounds clean and bacteria-free. It isn't cheap, but it's less irritating than Gentamycin, and a lot more accessible.
