My young buck, just be turning one here soon... seems to be awful thin... I have been reading as much on here as possible. And I have to applaud and thank some of you extremely knowledgable deer farmers out there, you all have gotten us out of some tough times! But this young buck seems to be getting really thin. He otherwise looks okay, he is eating, drinking, playing... happy guy. He does recently seem to be alittle more skidish... he was bottle fed in our home from day two and has always been the friendly one. He is on a great diet but obviously something is wrong. I was reading about using oil???? Can someone give me alittle clarity on that. And also using rice bran or more corn???... and suggestions. Thanks, I've read so much I'm feeling dizzy!!! Thanks guys!

I use lot oil.when they get thin, usually after rut,and nursing does. this time year bucks start slimming, especially if feeding high protien diet, what are you calling,a great diet? oil is used in feed for increases the fat, same as rice bran, lot of people mixing there feed add soybean oil.or rice bran,i just use grocery oil. corn or peanut.one thing about it it easy to get, and it human grade i guess what i trying to say better grade my thinking.if they getting proper diet you shouldnt need it.but when feeding higher protien for antler growth i like to increase fat some.on other hand i dont think it real good to get them northern genectics to fat here in okla, heat .my thinking and just what i do but i dont like ribs showing either i just watch, and always the have good worming, then you get better picture what goin on, i have changeed feed few times till i got it to my liking, and we all got diffrent opinions, hope to hear from some. Dc whitetails

they really shine after shedding winter coat.with little oil.my thinking.i will get this new thing figured someday.i was just trying to add something, not another. Mitch can i use the hilbilly excuse?

I have a doe fawn almost 1 now and she is on the thin side. She seems healthy and I have wormed her good. I am trying a rice bran from ADM called Healthy Glo. I have been feeding it for almost 2 weeks now and I can't tell a differnce yet. I am going to keep feeding it untill the bag is gone and see if it helps. I also feed about a cup of corn also. If this doesnt help I might try the oil in the feed. I think some of it may just be genetics cause the other doe fawn with her doesn't seem thin at all. Hope you get some more input on this.

Also sometimes you gotta just change feed, best i have seen mine is when i went to a 14% cheap creep, mixed 1to1 with baby beef,or just a cheap sweet feed, after rut,and weaning fawns. then if that fails you might consider Iron shot.and look for paw marks also, they could be the bottom on there pecking order, and not getting there daily requirments, another also keep enough feed so they can eat of the morning too, they eat before laying down for the day.and up and down few times.when you got 5 or 6 in pen i like to have 2 feed troughs.first take look at what you feeding and the protien level and the fat.protien is a fat burner.i like them to always get little alfalfa, most pen situations doesnt have the forage, and i think, that this is very important, you will not see a wild deer to many times looking poorly.they get plenty forage and low protien diets, for the most.also you can feed corn daily it has caused me no problems, all time i give corn if it not in my blend, you can tweek your diet and still get the antler growth .in pen situations, you dont need 20% my thinking,16to 17 fine i,my thoughts only.

This time of year they are looking pretty rough for sure, starting to lose that winter hair just comming out of a long winter, It is possible that he has worms, it would not hurt to worm him, you say he is a happy guy, playing and running around, it sounds like he is doing fine but without seeing him it's hard to say for sure.

Great thoughts David, I am still feeding Alfalfa here in Minnesota cause our forage is not up yet but spring might get here someday. I am feeding my deer ADM's 18% complete deer and elk feed so the protien is close to that 17% you are talking about. As for the Iron shot, is that something you would give periododically or a one time deal to get them going?

One time deal.i never used my dad give all baby pigs Iron shots,i heard that Doc gourly said.when couldnt get weight gain up give Iron shot,so maybe we could get some more input.I not to hot on complete Diets,I liked to starved them to death.on purina complete diet. Will never feed complete again not here might work for others.with plenty forage.

I've started top dressing the pellets with a yeast culture (spray corn oil on feed and then sprinkle the culture on) the deer love it and seems like they have started eating more feed. This is suppose to be good for the rumen and if the rumen is happy everybody is :)

James where you getting this? Most likely stillwater Milling. what is it called i go to claremore alot i want to pick some up. thanks David

Stillwater milling comes in 50# bags called Diamond V - XP, some of the clerks haven't heard of it . Just have them look under yeast culture. Under $25.00 and will last a long time. I know it is already in Record Rack feeds

I had good luck with record rack, but to save some miles i using Max rax now,so far i like what i see.And know what they have put into their reasearch, lot hard work.shane will help anytime, hope he find new forum, them tx,ns are awful close to us okies.

We use a product made by nutrena called "Power-Phat". It is made from rice bran and wheat germ oil but really puts the weight on them. We just add it to their feed once every 3-4 days.

Do you get that Power-Phat at a farm store or at a feed elevator and how much does a bag cost and how much do you give them every 3 to 4 days. I am trying ADM's Healthy Glo now for about 3 weeks and haven't seen any improvement in weight gain yet. I don't know if I should give it more time or try something new.

It comes from any Nutrena feed dealer. 4oz. per day is the recommended dose. It costs about 30 bucks for a 25# sack or b ucket

My one friend has a deer that is blind and she can not find the feed too good. She is now in a pen by herself where she is eating and doing ok. she is on the thin side so if he gives her rice bran or corn oil it should help with the weight? Let me know so i can let him know. Thanks

Drew,

Rice bran will definitely help put some weight on the doe. Does she have good browse in the pen? If not he may want to feed her alfalfa as well. Also, he may want to consider mixing in the rice bran with some molasses. They will eat it without dry, but just thinking if she's having touble finding the feed maybe the molasses will help.

Mike,

We have her in a small pen with good browse. She usually stays in the building where the feed is anyways so there isnt too much of a problem with her finding the feed. How much should i put in with the feed?

i would bet worms is the culprit. they can sneak up on one quick. I use pour on ivomec poured on corn. I double the dose labeled for cattle
