I am new to AI in Deer. I have Semen tanks, AI equipment and all that, been breeding cattle for over 10 years. I would call and order the semen from a catalog and could get 1 or 50 straws of 200 or 300 bulls all at the same place, then they would ship my order in a shipper, I would pull my straws out and put them in my tank until I used them. The semen company would send a UPS call tag for the shipper and UPS would come pick it up.

My guess is this is a bit different. It appears most people keep their semen stored at a few sites around the country that collect the semen. If I buy a straw of semen and it is at great lakes semen, how do I get the straw? Have one straw shipped in a shipper and then send it back?

Yes, that is how it usually works. Most folks don't want the hassle of keeping a semen tank charged all the time so they store it at a facility that has shipper tanks etc. Then when they sell a straw they just sign a release form and the facility ships it out. If you plan to buy a fair amount of semen, you might want to establish an account with someone like Great Lakes and just move anything you buy there to hold until you want to use it.

We store most of our semen there since Earl usually collects our bucks. He just takes it back with him and stores it. Once in the fall we have a batch of whatever we are going to use shipped out to us when we do AI.

That makes good sense actually, my semen tank has to be filled every 3 months to be safe, so 4 times a year. It costs about $30 or $40 each time, so its $120 to $160 a year. What does is cost to setup an account at Great Lakes? Also, what if I but a straw of semen from someone that has it stored somewhere else? I dont want to have to setup an account at every semen storage company do I?

No - just one place. When you buy some have it shipped to Great Lakes or wherever you decide to go - so all of it is in one place. It is very reasonable to store semen at any of the facilities. I don't think it costs anything - or a very minimal amount - to set up an account.

Brandon, We have our semen shipped to Trans Ova Genetics here in my home town when ever we buy semen. we get it released from the seller and have it local even if we are not going to use it right away. They are cattle semen storage facility with several locations might have something similar locally to you.Our reason for this we bring out the semen 2 days before we A/I (just so i dont forget):D And have a couple of back up straws just in case something were to go wrong during thawing, etc. just a piece of mind for us on a day we loose our mind stressing  out anyway!

OK, now I have a question. If I buy a straw of semen and it is at GLSS, and I want to have it sent to REI in Oklahoma (which I know Les, he flushed cows for me), the owner ofthe semen will transfer the ownership of the straw to me, how long until I have to move it since I dont have an account with GLSS?

Dont quite undersand that part.

Brandon, it will set in the owners tank until you (REI) send for it. REI can handle all of it for you. Just give them a heads up ahead of time. good luck
