Should I tb test this fall?

I am looking for advice.

Back before all the CWD in the pen and in the wild in PA, when I really had more freedoms to sell deer, I started to plan and build a handling facility mainly to avoid darting all my deer during a TB testing year.

I am doing all the work myself and am currently 50% done, I will have just over $3000 invested in it, but now I am reconsidering why I would even TB test. I AM going to finish my facility, because it will come in handy for sorting deer, but I really honestly don't see a point in TB testing. I am in Blair county, CWD was found in Blair county and incase you didn't know, pretty much every state except Ohio, will not allow animals from Blair county. I am sure it will be this way for a few years. So my question, Would you TB test if you can't sell out of state? What's the point of stressing the animals and spending the money in the vet bill? I am struggling with this because my genetic puzzle was finally coming together here on my farm, and God willing, I should almost certainly have a chance to have two 300" bucks this fall. I was really wanting to sell one as a breeder to recoup farm expenses, and I realize that no one from out of state will have a chance to buy, so I won't get as good of a chance to find a buyer, which leads to my next question. My breeders will be TB certified until January, this is the last chance for out of state buyers to get him if I don't continue my tb testing. Lets say, and this is really unlikely, that your state started to allow deer from Blair county this September. Now say that you saw an ad for my breeder buck, and you loved his look, his pedigree, and he was affordable to you. Would you buy from me knowing I had CWD in the wild in my county? Be honest. Do you feel that by doing so you threaten your herds future, or do you think this CWD is all BS and you wouldn't think twice about buying my buck. Thanks for you time, I appreciate any feedback.

Mathew,

I can understand your being hesitant in doing the Tb test......how many deer do you have to Test? The only problem with dropping your TB and Bruc. Status is that in the future you will have to test two years in a row to get the status back should you ever want too.....so it will cost you sooner if you do it now....or later if you decide to do it in a few years........man what a tuff one to answer..........I wish we knew where things will be once the smoke clears and the Federal Rules are Re Written. And how each State will decide to regulate us going forward.........just as long as we don't follow NY and the radical rules they are putting in place (thought I would throw that comment in there and see how someone else likes their state being bashed....but there is some truth to it also who in their right mind wants more regulations!!)....hopefully PA will continue to be a Deer Farmer friendly State and things will loosen up for you Mathew..........the problem right now is we just don't know where things will be in a couple of years.......it sure makes trying to plan for the future tough........I wish you the best Mathew and let me know of there is anything I can do to help........

I would not test them if they were mine. You can sell in state. You have the most deer farms outside of Texas. You have alot of ranches that will pay good money for a 300 inch buck, Maybe more if he does not have a top pedigree that someone would want for a breeder. Would i buy from you? Not a chance! Really sucks but untill things tighten up and your state is 5 years cwd free( You know...Like Ny is) Then you are selling to Pa only! Sounds as though some are ok with doing that and maybe thats because they dont have anything but stocker animals but it hurts guys like you that try to better themselves and their deer!

Dont test..Sell what you can untill the smoke clears. 5 years in most states..Thats a long time! If your herd is still breeder market animals then..Retest!

I am thankful for PA, and how they are dealing with this. Some states are not as lucky as us. Through all of this I am still allowed to sell deer in state, the game commission is not coming after me, and I am getting a lot of support from locals when I educate them on the ridiculousness of CWD. Granted, not a lot of people are not to optimistic about buying from me right now, because of the CWD close to me in the wild. But I can understand, not a lot of people know much about CWD, (and if they claim to, they are probably liars, lol) and its scary to some to risk their farms future by buying close to a CWD area. My deer are all healthy, very healthy, the odds of one getting CWD is almost non existent. But that however is hard to explain to a buyer that is scared of CWD. I am happy to say, I do have some buyers since it was in the wild, and I had other inquires. I almost fell into the trap and told myself that I should not buy from anyone incase they get a positive and drag me in, but I put my faith in the Lord and my farm will go the direction he intends it to if I trust him. I am not going to be afraid to buy. For the time being I still have buying and selling freedoms in PA, and if I see something I like to fit my program I will buy it.

I am struggling with the decision to TB test this fall, as of now I feel its best to not, In all the years I have TB tested I only sold outside of PA 2 or 3 times, but I am thankful for those customers and appreciate their business. I feel that that until I get more freedoms back, I don't want to spend the extra cash testing 25 adult deer. But how I am I going to sell a 300" buck for a breeder if I am not certified. Almost everyone interested in a breeder would be certified. Times are a bit tough right now, not knowing when or if I will ever be allowed to sell outside PA.

Awesome post Mathew you certainly have put your trust in the right place my friend!! He won't lead you wrong......Amen!!
