I am looking for advice.
Back before all the CWD in the pen and in the wild in PA, when I really had more freedoms to sell deer, I started to plan and build a handling facility mainly to avoid darting all my deer during a TB testing year.
I am doing all the work myself and am currently 50% done, I will have just over $3000 invested in it, but now I am reconsidering why I would even TB test. I AM going to finish my facility, because it will come in handy for sorting deer, but I really honestly don't see a point in TB testing. I am in Blair county, CWD was found in Blair county and incase you didn't know, pretty much every state except Ohio, will not allow animals from Blair county. I am sure it will be this way for a few years. So my question, Would you TB test if you can't sell out of state? What's the point of stressing the animals and spending the money in the vet bill? I am struggling with this because my genetic puzzle was finally coming together here on my farm, and God willing, I should almost certainly have a chance to have two 300" bucks this fall. I was really wanting to sell one as a breeder to recoup farm expenses, and I realize that no one from out of state will have a chance to buy, so I won't get as good of a chance to find a buyer, which leads to my next question. My breeders will be TB certified until January, this is the last chance for out of state buyers to get him if I don't continue my tb testing. Lets say, and this is really unlikely, that your state started to allow deer from Blair county this September. Now say that you saw an ad for my breeder buck, and you loved his look, his pedigree, and he was affordable to you. Would you buy from me knowing I had CWD in the wild in my county? Be honest. Do you feel that by doing so you threaten your herds future, or do you think this CWD is all BS and you wouldn't think twice about buying my buck. Thanks for you time, I appreciate any feedback.
