We had a membership meeting today and the head of our Dept Of Ag came to say a few words! Well his few words were that on April 17th they put an emergency block on any deer movement in our state. He informed us that on July 17th they will file papers and send out for public comment to shut our state down to any cervids coming in from any state.

We will be able to sell in our state and to any state that will accept animals from a state that is 5yr plus cwd free.

We have got to Unite some how in numbers and stop this!

If not there will be NO Deer Farms in the United States!

I know that it is not Just Me!

What about importing semen?

Yes Jeff we can still ship and use semen and embryo's. They shut down all movements..even in state..back in Oct 12 and just now coming out with what their real plan is!

That is ridiculous. The first CWD was found in NY back in 2003 or 2004 - and now they decide they want to shut it down????? Have we lost a decade?? Tell them the horse is already out of the barn!!

Oh we did. I think they are so proud of themselves that they have been able to keep it out of the state from back in 05. I also think they were ok with their strict rules keeping it out untill it hit our border in Pa. I asked how did they know we did give the wild deer in Pa cwd from our state?

We have had the strictest rules in the industry from way back when and they did a fine job of keeping cwd out for all those years. So why shut us down if the program has been working. Their answer was that the deer that was found in the pen in Pa has no background to show where, when and why. They say with no tracebacks being able to be done because someone dropped the ball in their inventory checks they do not feel good about taking any deer in. They say they believe someone brought a deer in from the wild in Pa and tagged it. I would say its just an excuse to use!

I will say that when you have a total of 6 people and 4 of them were board members show up to try and fight for your industry you are fighting a battle you cant win!!!! That's Sick!!!!!!

Gary was NADeFA president when that happened in NY. The poor guy was scared to death and I remember Gary flew out there and met with him. Then he went to Albany for some meetings and then when we had the DC fly in, we met with then Sen. Clinton's reps AND Schumer's reps to talk about it. A good question to pose is what has CWD done in the states where it was found? Not much. Everything is still going strong here in WI after 11 years! Shutting the borders won't keep wild deer from wondering back and forth - so do they intend to fence the border?? Hardly. If it were prevalant on deer farms we would find it in a flash with all the testing we do. They can't say the same for the wild herd. What are they doing to protect your herd from the wild herd?

LOL..Not a thing. They know it will show up sooner or later. The guy who had cwd in 05 was not really a deer farmer per say. I guess he had a few for his taxidermy work. Its just another one of those things with politics. They know we are a small group and with nobody coming to the meeting showed them more of that!

We did get the dec to back off on the numbers thing as before we were told how many deer we could have as to our pen size. We now can raise as many as we like but we have to ai to get any new blood. Some ranch owners are afraid that some will now over price their bucks and force them out of business!

These people don't even believe their own studies.

Use government documentation against them. This was all stated by USDA/APHIS:

On the new federal rule :

Page 8 ------ "Based on current science, 5 years of surveillance is a reasonable time period to determine whether the disease is present in the herd, as CWD has an incubation period. Thus, the movement of animals from a Certified herd poses a low risk of spreading CWD."

Page 9 ------ "The persistence of CWD in wild cervid populations and our current lack of knowledge about the transmission of CWD have made the goal of eliminating CWD from farmed or captive cervids impractical."

Page 14 ------ "there is a low risk that CWD will be present in a herd after 5 years of monitoring with no mortality."

Page 22 ------ "the scientific knowledge we have suggests that CWD is not highly infectious."

Page 23 ------ "movement of animals under part 81.3 already presents a low risk of spreading CWD, even without considering the low risk associated with the pathway of transportation through a state."

Thanks Gary. Hopeful that this makes its way to a court case. But that is very hard to do with just a handfull of people even show up to see whats going to happen with their future. Ny has always been a buying state and not so much a selling state.

Just to clarify. The state of NY, or any other state for that matter, has absolutely ZERO/NONE/ANY control over CWD and it's spread into or amongst their respective states. I've heard this statement of being CWD for "X" amount of years before, and it doesn't mean a thing. It just means it hasn't been detected either once, or again. No one can control CWD... just saying.

Also, this is not directed at you or any of your posts. But I have heard it before, and it makes no sense that any state/person/organization can control when, if and/or how often CWD occurs. Unless of course a given state chooses to not reveal a positive animal. Again, I'm not saying this has occurred anywhere in particular, just that it could.

It all boils down to them being so anal about cwd not coming back into Ny even thou it may well be here already.

He made the statement that it just came to light that there is a state we have been bringing deer in from that only tests the obex and not the lymph nodes. Also that inventory control was not consistent and with that the risk has increased. He did not say what state he was talking about!

Not sure you're getting the point. They can be as "anal" as they want... they cannot control nature! Coyotes, crows, deer scents, animals coming in from out west (regardless of rules or regs), you can have as many regulations as you want, you cannot STOP it from spreading. Lucky is a much more accurate term. PA was CWD free for countless years, and yet, we now have found it. It's all just a matter of time for any state.

Directions for getting rid of CWD, Stop testing for it.

I know I know that will never happen and I shouldn't joke but man isn't there other more dangerous things that they could be spending hard working individuals money on. Do they not think that if we have sick or wasting away animals we do not try everything to help them and if not we either quarantine or cull to not possibly infect our other animals. I mean if I have a deer that doesn't seem right I try everything to get it away from the other animals. I mean hey if my brother is sick I keep a distance.

I am from New York so I guess I need to invite a couple of the DEC and AG Dept guys out to see what's up. Trying to stop me from raising deer will be like trying to pry a donut out of a cops hand. I hope I did not offend anyone by this post. I'm sorry in advance if I did and I should take things about this issue a bit more serious but I have had enough. IM FROM NY AND I WILL NEVER STOP CHASING MY DREAM!

Did you get the email to be there? You could have had your shot at them then. I dont believe they will stop your dream, They will just stop one of the ways you go about it.

It doesn't matter the how's and why's at this point......but as we continue to watch state by state close their borders and sit back and not fight as an insustry we will lose in the end.......and it's sad........we as an industry need to take a different path and we are afraid to do it!
