We have moved our deer into a new pin that we put in the woods and one of our deer was sick but seems to be doing better but the question I have a guy said that the thorns in these penns could be hurting the deer he said that thorns can kill horses and cows so could be bad for deer also. well what do you think

thanks Ed

I don't think the thorns will hurt the deer at all..........this is my opinion.......if that is the case we have a lot of wild deer that are in a lot of trouble across our country cause there are a lot of thorns growing wild across the states. I have never heard of thorns being leathal to horses or cows either let alone deer....like I said this i my opinion only.

I will not have a tree with thorns. i think to easy,To get stuck.i would clear it,i seen some long ones.would be bad get one stuck in foot, i think sorry for the wild ones but i think they try stay clear. DC

Dc good point......i guess it is better to be safe than sorry......Hey its good to see you on the forums bud......hope your feeling better!!!

I know a guy that had a doe with infected jaw due to eating thorn, I myself feel if deer are not overcrowded and stressed blackberries bushes are a good sourse of nutrition, my deer love them with no problems, also there a main staple for wild deer! now multiflora rose is a whole diffrent thing, they can cause injury! Just my opinion.

When you say thorns are you saying raspberry thorns or thorn apple? They are two way different things. Raspberries are ok, never hurt my deer. Just they cleared the pen of every wild raspberry in it in short order. They love them. Now thorn apples are not so good. The thorns have something on them that causes infections. Got some stuck in me a few times and it always got swollen up and started a little infection. But I do still have a few in one of my pens and everyone seems to be fine. Have had deer in that pen for 11 years. With no apparent problems.
