Sick Deer

I have a Doe that has been acting very odd. Ever time I fill up the water bucket she immediately comes in and drinks a little water then basically attacks the water bucket with her hooves until she flips it over. She also seems to have lost any fear of humans as she comes right into the pen. I don't believe she has been eating anything for a couple of days either. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be and how I could treat it. I just have two deer and do have tranquilizing/squeeze equipment so would like a treatment if it is possible to put in the water. I am from PA if that includes or rules out any diseases.

I am in Lancaster county. I did figure out a little more what might be the problem. Tonight when I looked at my doe here tongue was hanging out the side of her mouth and the tip was all white and in the middle of her tongue there seems to be a small crater missing almost like she got cut or ran it into the fence. I believe her tongue is swollen and possibly infected from this. It seems like she is going to the water bucket so much because of the soreness of the tongue. I threw some grass in for her to eat and she carried it to the water bucket in her mouth and then swollowed it with water. I think this is why she is not eating as her tongue is in the way or she has trouble chewing without water. Is there something I can put in the water to help heal the tongue. Can you dilute some salt or Hydrogen Peroxide in the water to help heal this or something else? Is there some that can be added to water for an infection?

Rodney,

Not saying this is the problem, but try googling "wooden tongue". Might also be a good time to contact a vet as well, as it sounds like she is having a hard time eating and she could go down hill in a hurry...

Good luck,

John

There are several brands of sulfa based soulables available to treat water supplies with.
