sick doe

T

The Legacy Studio

The last few months this doe has developed a severe crooked back. She started off appearing like she had colic, all hunched over. It is now to the point she is getting spread legged. She still eats and walks, no blood in stool. Cannot run. Has anyone seen something like this before.Other than this she has always been healthy but small.

She is about 3 yrs old and is a runt that a friend of mine has and feels sorry for.

Thanks,

JC

What have you give her so far, I had a doe do that one time with us and she died. I cut her open and she had a peace of plastic in her she got from some where. I hope that isn't the case. I would think she is in pain, does she grit her teeths. What color is her stool and does she have alot of pellets in one place when she goes

I'll go down and check, it's a friends deer. I'm iced in today though. I either think she has a blockage also or severe arthritis. Will be in touch.

Might want to give her 3 cc of Draxxin right away just to play it safe in this cold. I had a buck that hump up like that when he started getting ammonia

maybe, like I said, she a friends pet and is the runt. Hope to be down there today to check on her.

Could there be a mineral deficiency possibly? My vet likes to give shots of BoSe (B complex and Selenium) when animals are under stress. I hope the little girl gets better soon- the pic really saddens me.

I went down to the farm where she is kept at. I help the owner take care of her captive deer. Anyhow the doe was bad, feverish, could not get up although she did once with me and just stood there which is unlike her cause she normally bolts. She was very imaciated. We decided to put her down. Afterwards I did an autopsy on her though I am no vet . I immediatley noticed on the outside alot of bruising on her right shoulder area. When I moved her leg it was quite obvious she had a broken shoulder and upper bone fracture. I could move her shoulder towards her back with no limits. I skinned her out and sure enough the bone fractures and smell of infection though nut puss was evident. It smelled soured. I eventually field dressed her out and found no indications of organ bruises or leasions in her heart, liver, lungs and feound no intestinal blockages in her stomachs or intestines. Did not see any visible signs of worms or snails either, again, I'm no vet.The contents in her stomachs was dark green tary paste. no blood in the remaining stools so, without blood work or otherwise. Looks like the humped back might have been due to her arthritis which we know she had and also the shattered shoulder. When she walked she really didnt indicate that she was injured.

Thanks for all the responses,

JC

It was very good of you to devote so much of your time to your friend's deer, and to put the poor girl out of her pain. Her spirit is in greener pastures now, I am certain of it!

Odd thing about it it she never really showed signs of the break, she still walked normally. Makes me wonder if the break did'nt happen in the later part. Oh well.

she still has her albino and two others.

My fawn looked just like your deer low in the front, small all the things you said about yours, I gave her bose,vit-b, Ivomec worm shot, then tested stool sample she had cossicda and liver flukes, I then treated her for that after a week she is starting to level out and is alot more alert, hope this helps someone in the furture.

kmfarm--- you gave your fawn Ivomec PLUS to kill off the liver flukes, right? regular Ivomec doesn't treat flukes.

Sorry is was not Ivomec for liver flukes, it was Valbazen, my fawn is doing great and now putting on weight.
