tonight i seen a 3 week old doe fawn go to eat from her mom, she ate a little then started wagging her tail furiously and momma started licking her bottom and i swore i seen blood behind her tail, so I ran up to the house grabbed the binoculars and seen the fawn had a golf ball sized abcess hanging out below her tail, it is bright red in color, definately a prolapse. My issue is major, the fawn that has the abcess dosen't have an ear tag or was not given vaccinations at birth, and guess why this didnt occur, because her mother will beat me if i even make her cry. This is the most insanely protective mother i have ever seen, she will not let you touch her babies. and to make it worse the fawn is in a large pen with waist high grass, i rarely seen my fawns that are in this pen, maybe only like every 3-4 days. So what do i do, its hard to know where to start when I fear for my life when I go in after this fawn. I assume this is an issue that requires human assistance, i have never heard of a case where a prolapsed organ corrected itself. Any thoughts, thank you

Don't go in with the absolute idea pepper spray will always work. I felt that is would back up anything when I tried it on a very protective cow elk. Heck I've sprayed it on black bears in the wilderness and they always left the area. It didn't work on this cow elk from ten feet away so I had my son drive in with my truck and she was right next to the truck bed and I sprayed her eyes and nose. She did not stop the attack as she was in the protective mode. Guess what I'm trying to say is have another way out if in trouble.

Air horns work or no?

I've never dealt with a mother anywhere near that protective, but with our protective mothers...the first thing I do when I wanna mess with their fawns without having them keep running up and huffing at me or jumping around me (or worse yet...ramming me gently from behind just enough to push me over) is I don't express any interest in the fawns...and I run her through the nearest gate where I can lock her out of the pen temporarily. Aside from that...best of luck!

Yep...this is very true. I know with reptiles, if they have a prolapse, you have a very short window where they may be able to pull it back in on their own...sometimes needing the aid of a saline solution to help shrink it up.

Once it begins to dry out, scab up, or gets covered in dirt...it's too late and MUST be fixed by a qualified vet or eventually it will get infected and die.

Antlershed,

If you can get your hands on that baby wash the prolapse with warm soary water then apply a generous amount of table sugar. This will cause the prolapse to shrink and allow you to gently push it back in. Allot of times it will stay in place without the need of stitches. If not just do it again and this time put in couple.

Thank you all for your suggestions, that is why i love this site, you get so many tips from different farmers. I have my work cut out for me, but i'll try. Thank you all

Preparation H added to the sugar helps to shrink the tissue too. Just explain to the check-out clerk all those tubes you buy are not for you (ha-ha)

I personally would recommend a saline solution over table sugar...main reason being, so it's not all sticky and better yet...so none of its pen-mates decide to suck it back out while trying to eat the "candy" out of its butt. I know they like salt...but seems like they'd take sugar over salt...

We have used sugar for many many years on cows and deer with absolutely no problems and it is amazing how fast the prolapse shrinks.
