stud fee / boarding deer fee

Hello, this is my first post...I hope this isn't somewhere else on the site, if so, my apologizes.  I just started deer farming about a year ago and have a couple of questions I hope to get input from experienced farmers.

1.)  I have a few bucks on my place that are another person's and am just boarding them.  What would be a reasonable charge for boarding?  Does that fee include feed and meds?

2.)  One of the bucks has a nice rack and I'm considering using him as a backup buck this year.  What would a reasonable charge be for that service?  And is it per doe?

I really appreciate any feedback offered.  I have found this site to be very helpful to gather information.  Thank you.

I believe most farms charge like a dollar a day. That includes feed and reasonable care but i believe any vet care would be on the owner. As far as stud fee well that could run the gauntlet. Some could charge by does or a lump sum. I would think you could come up with a fair exchange between the two of yas, If he charges by the doe and you only back up with him then you would have to wait till spring of course to see if he did the service on the doe that missed. If he charges a lump charge for the breeding service you could lose if all your does take to the ai. Good Luck and welcome to the site!

We charge $ 80 per month per head...........Feed,Hay,Daily care and All meds.............If a Major Vet expense it's on the Owner.

Also remember this..........Every Deer you Board is ONE less of Your own that you have room for!

Also if they decide at some point to NOT pay Boarding..................What YOU will do with them!

Best of Luck

$1.00 a day doesn't even cover the feed at most farms here in PA that feed a commercial feed. If a person charges that the will be losing money.

Four Seasons,  thank you for the reply.  I have less than one year under my belt so far, so still getting a beed on my annual feed costs.  I've heard suggestions of $500/year to cover cost of feed and meds (feed costs seem to go up and down).  The boarding cost seems to be consistant in that I need to set a fee + vet costs.  Was looking to get $$$ and I appreciate your imput.  As far as the buck breeding, I was considering just using this buck versus AI this fall as just getting started has alot of expenses getting everything rolling and trying to keep pace expanding fencing and such.

Whitetail Sanctuary,  Thank you for your reply.  I think your price is in the right area.  The owner and I had talked about maybe exchanging a doe fawn as reeimbursement as well.  Just trying to get ideas from other farmers who have been there done that!  I know what you are talking about with boarding, I've double the size in one year!  Need more fencing:).

You have to think about this in a different way.  Yes it costs 400 to 500 to feed a deer top quality feed.  But what about your cost to put up the fence?  What about the care in winter which here means water freezing?  What about your time you should figure in something for that.  A buck a day if your feeding them right didn't cover the cost of feed.  I'm with Wayne here you should charge 80 to 100 a month so you get paid for your time and feed.
