Sudden fawn death

Have a buck fawn, mother cleaned it but would not let it nurse. Pulled the fawn after 5 hours of watching and fed it colostrum. Continued to feed colostrum for the first three days and the fawn seemed to be doing fine. Introduced a bit of milk replacer to the colostrum on day four and the fawn seemed to love it. He increased his intake from 1-1.5 teaspoons every hour and a half to a 1 to 1.5 tablespoons every 2.5 to 3 hours. Was active, playing, following me around, etc. 12 hours after started introducing milk replacer, about time for his next feeding, was talking then suddenly screamed and had a massive sezure, legs thrashing, head flung back along spine. Following this his extremities went cold (legs, tail, chin). He passed away three hours after the event. Do not know what went wrong. Am feeding the exact same type of colostrum and milk replacer thet I've used for the last two years with great success. Did note that this fawn seems to have a very rounded head, high forehead. Any ideas are welcome, would prefer not to lose another one like this.

I dont think it got nothing to do with milk or anything you did or could have prevented, i do have concern about the tablespoons, and teaspoons, at day 4, mine sucking down half bottle.!! im wandering if it had more problems, other than head, but i think nature knows when to cull, i Think mom knew he was not right and that is how nature works, only my thinking, DC

im no expert but one thast small cant reach *** to nurse, they nurse when mom lays. any that small i deffinitly pull, i relly think nature knows best. Sorry for your loss, keep pluggin. BOL Dc maybe somebody else got a thought.

I had a similar one last week. Twins, she fed one and not the other. I gave it everything I know how to do, but Mother Nature made the call. What is the old commercial tag line "don't mess with Mother Nature".... Sucks, though.

hated losing the little guy...lost his brother the first day...he got stepped on...could feel the broken ribs.

LaJean.....that little guy was doomed before you ever had any involvement in it.......doesn't make the loss any easier. Sorry about your loss....just know there was nothing more you could do for the guy.

La jean, i will never forget my first loss, was buck fawn i had bottle fed for bout a month, was mowing.and he spooked and broke leg. was healing. damn. if wasnt mowing again was watching, but just a sudden turn, or twist, he went down again,we put in pet carrier, was wrong thing to do time we got to vet he was all tore up, i held him whiole he was uthanized, talk about old man and wife crying, i called the guy i bought him from was crying, he looked for me another, but i found one myself.. i was just thinking. if you have any more watch your other does, you stated one was stepped on, well my thinking it was probably stomped by another doe, i seen this more than one getting stepped on, so i just hoping you have some more but watch your does try seperate, for few days. usually helps.they get all excited when one is born, you never know what the others will do. hope you luck changes, DC

Sorry for your loss. Like DC said, just keep plugging away. The ones that make it will make it well worth it!!!!
