I have an older buck. He's 9 or 10 now with a big body and huge rack. A few years ago some ******* trespasser shot him and did some damage to his right shoulder. ever since his rack is screwed up and he's slowed down. Now I notice his legs look skinny but his knees look big and round.

I'm wondering if there is anything I could give the old boy on a periodic basis to ease any pain he might have. I'm thinking he's arthritic or something.

First give a round of antibiotics to see if it is not an infection causing swelling of the joints. If you do not suspect any kind of infection, glucosemine/condroyten is a wonderful treatment for joint issues related to age and arthritis.

Of course! I should have thought of that. But now I'm wondering how I can get this into him. He's somewhat tame, but not handle-able. How often, daily? I was hoping for a once a month treatment that I could maybe dart him with. At any rate, I didn't suspect an infection, but I suppose it is a possibility. I will start with that. Thanks Scott.

Duh???

I'm Shocked !

Actually, they love bananas and I have gotten pills into them that way before. My biggest problem with that method is that I throw it out there for one and while that one dawdles the fastest doe gets it all. I've also had them spit out the pill and still get the fruit! I'm trying to isolate him now so I can get the stuff in him dependably. I just go kind of slow and patient and sometimes it takes a few days.

But thanks again.

Next Duh question, I'm debating on what antibiotic to use. Any suggestions? I have finally found a vet that will work with me but knows nothing about deer by his own admission. He will give me a prescription if I ask for it though.

Since we really do not know exactly what we are combatting, a broad spectrum antibiotic is in order. I suggest Tetradure (3cc IM every 3 days for 9 days) Tetradure can be delivered with a dart. Just try to shoot alternating flanks as it can cause a bump if delivered too much in one place. The heavier the muscle you place the dart into, the more effective the medication. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.

I see that Tetradure is oxytetracyline (sp). Why do you prefer that one over others? I can get oxytetracylcline OTC by many names. I'm just curious as to why you prefer this one.
