Tail Came Off

I don't know what happen but we found one of our fawns' tail on the ground. The tail wasn't like bit off. She just has what I'll call a "rat tail" The part that came off has hair on what looks like a sleeve. Don't know what to do :(

1) Will the hair grow back?

2) Should we leave it alone? Treat it? Cut it off?

Any coyote problems? That's crazy stuff? I would put the deer down and amputate then med. the wound ask your vet. First before you do it tho should be fine. Good luck!!!! Charlie.

I would say there is little to no chance she will ever grow hair again, from what I understand in your explanation, she lost the skin along with the hair. I don't think there is a huge chance for infection, since the tail has very little blood flow to it (its mostly bone and tendon) I would imagine the cold dry air of winter will scab it over quickly and it will be like a callous, but I would still at least put a dart of antibiotic in her, or you can do as Charlie said and amputate, since she won't really have a normal tail again anyway, wouldn't hurt to remove it. Let us know what you do and how she is doing.

You wouldn't have a tail biter in the bunch? When we raised hogs we would get one from time to time . Nasty thing dad would shoot them on the spot!!! Charlie.

The tail was likely stripped off from either another deer or got hung in the fence. It is not that hard to strip a tail off. It is done on all animal furs when skinning. You can put a close pen on the tail of a racoon and without much pressure strip it right off the bone.

You should cut if off or it will rot off. Be sure to treat the wound and give antibiotics.

Have a fellow farmer/friend/client that had one do the same thing. She was about 35 lbs and did it 2 months or so ago. We put her out and put a couple castration bands on it just over the last part of skin left. The end fell off and healed fine. I figured if I amputated it she might lick at it or others would. That was just a guess. It fell off and healed up fine. If you have any questions about how I did it please call 765-**623-**2316

probably got stepped on by another deer and when she got up fast the tail stayed under the other deers hoof. seen it happen to a fawn and an adult - they end up with stubby tails

Charlie..i would say no as this is the first tail we have seen off of our 23 deer. The deer with the tail off is a runt though

D&T -

That's what is so awesome about this forum, ya either get educated guesses on what to do, or you get someone that has experienced the exact thing you are experiencing, get their remedy that worked to fix it, and then apply it if you wish.

Either way, experienced or educated guesses, they can sure help when one has no idea or is just looking to affirm or confirm what they were thinking all along.

Health & Wellness Forum - Best whitetail vet in the country...definitely one of em!!!

Had this before when tail got stepped on. First time I had the Vet out and took off the end . Healed up fine. Second time , just let nature take its course and it fell off by its self and healed up fine.....choose for yourself. Jim
