Had a fellow deer farmer ask me if Telazol or BAM was better proven for not aborting fawns while TB testing this year.

I have always used the Telazol/Zxylazine mix without any issues, but would like your advice.

Thanks!

Abortions are almost never caused by the drugs themselves but rather the handling of animals improperly i.e. stress etc...

He is testing in a couple weeks, and I do agree that stress is the number one killer. Single blood test only.

I've only used bam for my tb testing and it worked great animals where down and tested in 10 minutes and back up within 15 minutes of being darted.

we use Telazol/Zxylazine only had issues with repackaged reversal in brown bottle.  Have never had an issue with the original manufacturer in clear bottle and sealed box for reversal.  We did the blood test because it was a one time sample.  Ha Ha.  We found out like others did you have a much higher chance of false positive which they then have to repeat blood test and then kill your deer to identify it does not have TB.  The USDA does not pay well for a deer you have to kill to do the necropsy.  We did our testing last spring in March.  They did not let us prove false positive with skin test once the blood test had been done.  Unless they have changed the rules I would suggest you talk to a number of others that have done the blood test to see how many they had false positive and had to kill deer.  They told us they would have to kill 100 or more before considering changing the backup test for false positive.  Has anyone heard what they are doing now when you have a blood test that shows positive?

After talking with our herd vet and the state area vet they had changed the parameters after last year. We tested our entire herd here at ACW March 10th and did not have one false positive from the blood test. I talked to multiple vets through out the state of WI before we tested and all showed a greater amount of confidence in using the blood test than years prior. Ryan
